Stowing a spare anchor?

I rather like the approach to stern anchors employed by some in quiet bays among the Greek islands..... when one deploys the bow anchor about a dozen boat lengths out, stop, then have the mehmsahib swim ashore with the stern warp - and wrap it around a handy tree.

If encouraged to try this, do please remember to detach the anchor first.....

If your Fortress is not too large it is quite possible to float it, using fenders. Aluminium anchors really come into their own! No need for trees. Remove the floats when or where appropriate. It helps if it remains attached to the rode . It is also more pleasant in warm water. Ideally you want to deploy to a beach or to water deeper that you draw - or its a devil to retrieve.

Alien as the concept might be in 'the mother country' floating Fortress anchors with fenders is not un-common......

Where the water is warm and there is no fear of sharks. Swimming in warm water is just another of the benefits offered tax free, down under.

I stow my spare bower anchor secured to the pulpit forward, and my kedge by the pushpit at stern as that is where they will be needed. Carrying a large anchor forward along the deck in bad weather is a terrifying experience. A weight that could kill you if you fell over board carried needing two hands on a narrow sidedeck where you need one hand for the ship.

On our old boat I used to stow the spare in a side locker, which is how I know the issue of deploying it as secondary anchor (Somewhere off Tresco in a F6 gusting F7).

However our boat is a bit of a tub so weighting the bows makes little impact, other considerations may apply in a more tender boat.
