Establishing a support group for those who are confined to port because of the wind

I am in Mallaig

there is a ten in the forecast for Weds night

reckon I will be here until Friday morning

lekkie and web so feeling cosy and safe

last night was uncannily calm

While I fully agree that F10 gusts are scary, they should not be unexpected with a F8 forecast which is what it is. We've certainly had gusts in that area during this season, and some consistent winds of over 40kts, probably about F9 while at anchor in relatively sheltered anchorages.

Our rule of thumb, shared by many others who sail in The West, is to expected gusts of one to two notches higher up the Beaufort Scale than the forecast would indicate.

Hope you have a safe, secure and pleasant night. I love it on the boat when the wind blows hard, either in harbour or at anchor, it's one of these man and nature things, just good to be close to the action, but safe of course.
 
I've not seen that weather site before, but I'm intrigued by the right-hand column. Could you have a look and tell me why those forecasts were so popular, and, if it's not too personal a question, how you cast your vote for the Mallaig one?
 
Well not exactly confined to port but after a quiet hurricane season to date I was at DEFCON 3 with the full expectation of going to DEFCON 5 as Chris Parker the Caribbean weather guru was talking about 60 knots in Grenada.

The float plan was filled in for Trinidad, the prop was scraped and I was ready to sail overnight to Trinidad.

However Invest 97 hung a right and is now forecast to be over St Lucia or thereabouts when it blows through as rotating storm on Wednesday night. Martinique looks to be favorite for the 60 knots.

Hunker down in the nooks and crannies of Marin Martinique, it is going to blow hard.

As for me it is back to DEFCON 2 and time for a swim off the back of the boat to cool down after a most excellent Chicken Parmigiana at Whisper Cove Marina.

Xcweather.co.uk - near compulsory for planning, and in my recent experience more accurate than MetOffice up north and west

And as a bonus one of the options for units of visibility is leagues, don't know what a league is but it sounds good.

I prefer wind speeds in Beaufort forces but some folk like mph or Kts, presumably they have wind instruments, I have to guess and add 1 for bar room bragging.
 
Fortunately there is no North in the forecast. You will be well sheltered.
I know from experience that you do not want to be in Mallaig in a northerly F8.

Sat out a F10 there a couple of weeks ago. There wasn't as much W in the wind but the shelter was good. I can thoroughly recommend the Steam Inn for a bit of R&R. Good luck.
