Storm - over reaction or not?

Hey, ljs my SWMBO is convinced that my mother in law in Teignmouth will be swept away by an enormous wave. I'm not so sure because Teignmouth faces east. Is there any hope?

It's just been confirmed that Teignmouth is submerged beneath a tsunami style tidal wave, no hotels left standing.

However I have rescued your MIL. And popped her into a taxi heading for F towers. She should be with you by early morning.

That's the true spirit of the forum, ljs. I'm sure Deleted User will want to thank you as soon as he has recovered the power of speech.

Oh what a shame! The storm of the century has blown down several trees on the roads to our house and the driver will just have to turn around and head right back to Devon. Would you mind looking after the old biddy for us for the several months its going to take our council to get around to clearing the roads? She's a pussycat really and I'm sure she'll take quite a shine to a distinguished elderly gent such as yourself

Agreed. The Met Office have got the weekend weather very wrong on a couple of weekends recently when I have had to take part in outdoor events and I don't have any confidence that they've got this one right either. Yes they should treat us like adults and assign probabilities to every forecast so that people can make their own interpretation of forecasts based not only on the predicted weather but also the probability of it occurring as predicted

Simon keeling does that. He says f6 or more 100% probability and has done since Friday.

What has happened down here is the winds have changed
Clouds rolled in from the south and it started to rain
Rained real hard and rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Lymington

The river rose all day
The river rose all night
Some people got lost in the flood
Some people got away alright
The river have busted through clear up to Brockenhurst
Six feet of water in the streets of Lymington

Prime Minister Cam'ron came down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The PM say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has
done
To this poor yachtsman's land."

Forecast was always for it to come through in the small hours. So far seen 45 knots on sotonmet and local news already reporting power out. Coverage has been excessive, public transport efforts are poor but get the feeling that the the wind gusts will probably hit the numbers quoted but don't think the sustained wind will be anywhere near. Looks like a sustained force 9-10 gusting 12

Don't worry Mike, instead of a sandwich box, I foresaw the fallen tree issues so I packed her off with a couple of chainsaws. So when you hear that distinctive high reving 2 stroke engine you'll know to put the kettle on.

At Mullion ( Lizard) it's currently 6 gusting 7, same as last night.

Dogs woke me up when the guttering came down on the corner facing the wind and some tiles down. Had to switch to the bedroom at the back or the house for it was too noisy!

Was at Haslar Marina at 6am and everything seemed ok.
Walked down C, D & E pontoons and all boats seemed ok, apart for a Targa 43 which the rear cover had blown off, so re-attached.

Other than the torrential rain overnight we escaped the worst up here!
Sad to see someones pride and joy washed up on a shingle beach on BBC breakfast news this morning, anyone here know the boat named "Placebo"? didn't catch the make or model other than it was a sports cruiser 25/30ft at a guess!

The UK storm has been all over the local news here too. We are expecting the remains of it to hit our south coast.

I do hope there hasn't been too much damage to people and boats.

This pic of the boat Rob mentioned was in Helsingin Sanomat this morning, doesn's look nice.

That looks like Brighton, and if it is, it could very well be unrelated to the storm - there was a guy here who grounded his boat a couple of days ago, and was promptly arrested.

The winds will clearly affect people differently. I went down to view my boat this morning, only through my binoculars, but had to drag three trees (well very large branches) out of the road to the higher ferry, I couldn’t move the others but managed to drive around them. Along with flooding and other debris it looked quite apocalyptic!
I also had a fence panel blown to bits too – grrrr

The rest of the drive to work looked quite normal, as if nothing had happened, so many will wonder what the fuss was about.

But my boat looked ok, luckily she would have been fairly well sheltered where she is.
I do agree however that we seem to blow these things out of proportion, but forewarned is forearmed as they say.

And I hope everyone else’s pride and joys are all ok too.

certainly is Brighton. But it is not 34ft and looks like it was on a swing mooring that has parted or dragged so I don't think related to the boat story a few days back.. very sad sight... looks like someone's going be be finding out how well their boat is covered by their insurance..
