Storm - over reaction or not?

Just watching media reports one can't help wonder if there is an over reaction in advance or not. I'm sort of wondering if it really has the potential to be another 'Michael Fish' weather moment or is there a degree of media hysteria? They are talking about cancelling trains before any effect is measured!
 
It's to be expected.

If the met office say 'no snow' and it snows everyone complains. If they say 'loads of snow' and nothing happens no-one cares. They are just rolling out the same logic with all adverse weather.
 
Total over reaction. London is going to grind to a halt tomorrow because all trains from the south of the capital and East Midlands have already been cancelled. Perhaps I'm old fashioned but shouldn't rail companies attempt to run a service until such time as the weather prevents them rather than cancel all services before they actually see how the weather is affecting them?. We're a bunch of wimps in this country

Think we are constantly lowering the threshold of what is high wind, after all Michael Fisch's blow was nearly twice as strong as this one, in fact this is close to a normal southwest blow.

over reaction but as its a no win situation for them!

its pretty wet and windy here but it did make me get around to clearing the gutters on the flat roof this afternoon (which i have been meaning to do for 6 weeks) and put the garden table and chairs away so not all bad!
 
Hey, ljs my SWMBO is convinced that my mother in law in Teignmouth will be swept away by an enormous wave. I'm not so sure because Teignmouth faces east. Is there any hope?
 
The Met Office claim to be able to forecast the weather, but they can't. The atmosphere is too complex to model accurately with current technology, but they can't admit it. The best they could do would be to publish probabilities of weather events in particular areas, but the public don't understand statistics, so they're stuffed.
 
To be fair, from what i have seen of the forecasts, the timings have been pretty much spot on. maybe they have over egged it but rather be on the cautious side than unprepared side.

did feel sorry for Mr Tesco man that just delivered out shopping, poor bloke was like a drowned rat!

Agreed. The Met Office have got the weekend weather very wrong on a couple of weekends recently when I have had to take part in outdoor events and I don't have any confidence that they've got this one right either. Yes they should treat us like adults and assign probabilities to every forecast so that people can make their own interpretation of forecasts based not only on the predicted weather but also the probability of it occurring as predicted
