Storm Éowyn

Ooo, err. CMAL site showing gust of 76 knots (87mph) a few minutes ago at Largs, in the usually well sheltered Clyde - this is a very serious storm, certainly the forecasters didn’t over egg the red warnings, as some on here suggested.
Almost everything currently stopped in most of Scotland - and lots of reports of damage. Not niceIMG_1167.jpeg

Only 57mph, here in Norfolk at the moment..
Nothing compared to the 126 mph recorded at Benbecula met office, in about 82, when I lived in a barrack room that looked down on it..
Building was swaying, water sloshing in the toilets.
Fair amount of damage to the radar that night..

(2) Late 80’s Michael Fish “there is no storm”, storm, above 100 kts.
I am sure that those with good memories will know that Mile Fish said that there will not be a hurricane. He said that winds would be very strong, a serious understatement as it happened. The BBC always used to stop the clip after the word hurricane - why spoil a good story. He was, of course, quite correct even though, in the event, it was an injudicious comment.

I am sure that most sailors will well know that Beaufort defined F12 as Hurricane Force, That which no canvas can withstand. Commander Beaufort knew full well that a hurricane is a tropical storm of great strength. In view of the definition, he saw no reason to define winds > F12. As some posts have noted, there are additional forces, sometimes used.

Some have commented on the word phenomenal. This has long been used to describe waves with F12.

This storm and others in recent years have shown that forecasting has improve vastly in the past 40 years. It will never be totally perfect. The atmosphere is not precise. Nor can forecasts ever be precise several days, even several hours ahead.

The Spanish Met Authority has named Storm Herminia track uncertain but hopefully not a major impact on areas already suffering damage, due on Sunday

" It's 3 days shy of 51 years since a big storm sank the 'sugar ship' off Helensburgh."

Blimey! That's made me feel old. She wasn't there on the shoal when I first ran up to Finart Oil Terminal with crude from Mena al Ahmadi, Kuwait.
