An Italian container ship bound for Brazil while carrying some 2,000 cars including some three dozen Porsches caught fire and sank in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of France last week. All 27 crew members aboard were rescued by the British military, though French authorities quickly began to clean up an oil spill caused as a result of the sinking.

The vessel ran aground on March 12 about 150 nautical miles southwest of Brest, France, at a depth of 15,000 feet beneath the surface of the ocean.

The German automaker confirmed on Tuesday that the doomed vessel was carrying four models of the 911 GT2 RS

Been of concern here for days, because of the pollution risk. First floating container towed into Le Rochelle yesterday, 44 pallets of ....biscuits. No sign of any Porsche motors :)

Grande America was a con-ro; half boxship, half roll-on, roll-off. Yer Porches would have been on the ro-ro decks but will now be feeding the fishes in Biscay under 4.5km of water until the sun goes supernova and boils the oceans. Then we'll get to see how well German engineering stands up to the elements.

I watched this ship pass through the Dover Straight a few days ago. As Newtothis says, being a very odd hybrid of a container vessel and a roro ferry, it caught my attention. Lucky (for us) it didn't catch fire there. Grimaldi Line ships are not that often seen in the English Channel.

I knew about the con-ro bit and cars don't normally float.. Just thinking back to the lot that washed up on the Jurrasic coast with BMW bikes in the containers.
