Hi
I am replacing the stop cable on my inboard diesel. It is fitted low down at the rear port side of the cockpit and is difficult to use easily due to it coming out horizontally. There is a tendency to pull it at an angle and more chance of it being stood on . I think I have seen other boats with a cowl that allows the handle to exit around 45° which would be easier. I have searched the net with no luck, has anyone seen them for sale.
Thanks Pete

I had the same problem, and after 2 sets of the cable freezing up and the pull knob being broken off by errant feet, I removed the thing and went down the KISS route: a piece of nylon string through a garden hose pipe to the port cockpit locker: Open locker, pull string which is attached to an eye and hangs free, engine stops /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The return spring on engine pulls the string back ready to start the engine again.

Cost: Zero. Time to install <5 minutes. Susceptabilty to failure .... I reckon it will last longer than the other 2 'posh costing' cables which failed after a max of 4 years each and were an absolute bar-steward to take out and install .... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

IMO, there's nothing like doing something which cocks a snook at yards who say you should do this and spend ££££'s in their swindleries when all you need is a clothespeg* and a bit of string /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

*No clothespeg used in this example, but they are a useful part of any toolkit /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When my Volvo one disintergrated, I fitted a Vetus DC stop control. You can see this on page 127 of their catalogue .

There are other manufacturers but you need to check that the cable at the engine end is compatible with your current fittings. If you buy the cable and bracket together then the cockpit end will already be matched. I had to 'modify' the Vetus bracket to get my cable to fit. The Morse bracket that I originally bought at vast expense took a 33C cable which didn't fit the current set-up of my engine.

Oops. Too slow with my typing!

Thanks Rogershaw and Dipper for the reply`s The Vetus cowl is just what I am after Although I have just bought a stop cable and it looks like it only comes as a kit.
Thanks mortehoe but it would cause a lot more trouble to alter the whole system rather to just alter the handle end.
Thanks again
Pete

Hello Pete
I had the same problem on my Colvic, I purchased the
45 deg mounted chrome stop with T bar handle from ASAP supplies in January for £20.65 part number 608298 + 3M of new cable for £23.21 part no 608111.
Fitted easily and looks well and works a treat, fitted new cable to do job once and for all at the same time.
Hope this helps
Mike
