S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

I spent yesterday 10-7 at the show. I thought I was in the wrong place. It was a motor boat/ motor yacht (no masts allowed) show with a smattering of charter plastic yoghurts (over priced). Long keels...not to be seen (some Island Packets...with swimming platforms). Overall I left feeling there needs to be a Practical Boat Owner Show..for the real world folk.

What no BAVARIA'S I'm astounded were you really at the Southampton boat show or are you just another dreamer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

I gave up going to the boat shows to look at new boats for the same reasons. I left the SBS a few years back saying to my wife that the only boat I'd seen all day that had a "proper" shape was a Danish Folkboat! I still go every year for gear, etc, but never even glance at the parade of AWBs. I'd rather spend my time looking at some of the old GRP classics around the marinas and boatyards, with an eye open for my next renovation project. One day, there'll be a real demand for these, as there will be no possibility of buying anything remotely similar from new.

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

I went yesterday & I wandered if it was me. I have always liked SBS but this years offering seems to be heading the way of the London show./

Still I suppose I will save a fortune on Parking & Entrance fees fro now on cos it ain't worth going to.

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

Many, many years ago I realised the true worth of any boat show was to frighten the hell out of you with the obscene prices (well, maybe not to you, but they were and are to me!) and to send you back on the pilgrimage round the yards and brokers where your measly pittance seemed to go far further!

Most boats are like most computers, they have thousands of capabilities you will never use, so I am happy trying to get more out of ours, and a long way off from finding the boats limits (unlike mine).

AN APPEAL TO THE MODERATOR OF THIS FORUM.

I feel that the right place for this thread is SCUTTLEBUTT.

This PBO forum is too precious to allow us to go down our own paths of what a boat, or boating should or shouldn’t be. It only causes bad feeling among us and ultimately destroys the purpose of this wonderful forum.

It’s purpose I’am sure was more toward a practical nature and not a core belief of what sailing or boats should be like.

I defend most strongly the poster’s viewpoint and need to raise this kind of subject. Perhaps he raised it here in error anyway instead of Scuttlebutt.

Kind regards to the original poster.

I think I saw it today - fabulous sight - 56 feet of wood with a beam of (I'm guessing) about 12'?

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

Went last year for the first time in several years. Very disappointed (apart from seeing a couple of lovely wooden yachts) and will not go again.

LBS more convenient for me. I will still go to this, but without the smaller yards showing their boats it is not really the same.

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

I thought exactly the same thing after watching the [--word removed--] of a boat show program on tv today. After watching that you wouldn't believe that yachts even existed, one mobo after another.... and what have whales in Iceland got to do with SIBS? I think they commented on one yacht, Southerly? and then a background shot of the Bavs... thats it!

Was it just me, or was that boat show program the biggest waste of space on tv?

I'm going on Thursday, but not out to buy a new boat just some bits & bobs, so should be OK.... still nice to have a quick look though anyway.

"Was it just me, or was that boat show program the biggest waste of space on tv?"

Definitely not the biggest. Yes it was shite, but think of some of the other offerings - Big Brother, Ready Steady Cook, etc /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

BTW, whats with the mouth washer outer? It allows shite and cleans up c r @ p

Well I know what they are like so don't bother watching, but I thought they could have made an effort for this... 30 mins a year for a large show whereby the industry isn't otherwise publicised is not a lot to ask for.... is it?

Its alright for us, we know the show and what to expect, but what about newcomers that may have never been before... do you think that program would enspire them into a visit??

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

We went yesterday, had a great time. Visited lots a boats we can’t afford, just to be nosey and see how the other half live.

Got there just after lunch, it was not too busy and was really quiet after 1700.
As usual it’s a good place to talk to manufactures and suppliers and compare products.

Missed Tom Cunliffe on the Kelvin Hughes stand. Interestingly, in his absence the signing table was occupied by a half drunk G&T and a part empty bottle of Becks. He must have departed in a hurry!

I disagree

"Overall I left feeling there needs to be a Practical Boat Owner Show..for the real world folk. "

If the posting asks this question, why should it be on Scuttlebutt, which is the Yachting Monthly forum (in theory).

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

It's my understanding that manufacturers use the boat show to exhibit their current and latest designs to a potential buying public and that the designs reflect what buyers want. Not sure that its really viable for them to bring the old models along as well, though fortunately, we're able to see them all year long in many brokers yards, where they can be bought for much less than new ones.

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

Well said, A few long keelers are still made new but there is not much demand for them. I do get a bit fed up with people going on about dated designs as if they were the bees knees! It also seems from sales figures that these are not the people that would buy a new boat.

Lets start a row - people that are clever enough to make lots of money and be able to afford a new boat are not stupid enough to buy a new long keeler! Discuss!!

Re: S\'ton Boat Show: Is it me???

A lot of the new boats are like the new Land Rovers. Look like they can do the job but in reality they can't. Doesn't bother the new buyers as they're only interested in the dream. I've lost count of the number of people I've overheard at boat shows looking at 30' mobo's and saying how they're going to cross the atlantic in it.

Well I for one don't fit your hypothesis!! I am a potential new boat buyer, but the fat-arsed AWBs just leave me totally disinterested! Just my opinion, and others won't share it, but I think there's many of us being left out in the cold by an industry that is now dominated by a few huge international companies producing boats predominately for the holiday charter market.
