I had an outboard in for a service, the firm have just contacted me to say they were broken in to last night and my engine, along with many others, was stolen. They will give me a crime number to claim on my insurance.

My question is, should it be me claiming on my insurance or the firm who were doing the servicing on their insurance?
This is like when Garages had signs "Cars left at owners risk" I had a car at a garage for an MOT. There was a Giant Hailstorm and my car was covered in dents. The garage suggested that I claim off my insurance. They were proved wrong.

I had a 3.0ltr Opel Senator in for its injector pipes to be replaced ........ during lunch break while mechanics were at cafe .. young apprentice lad decided to sit in the car ... it was a Festoo version with all the best options and trim, modified engine .. He had windows down and sunroof open ...

He decided for some strange reason to turn the key ... fuel pumped out and she caught fire .... he jumped out .... and fire engulfed not only exterior - but inside as well ....
The car was luckily only just inside workshop doors - rolled her out and put it out.

Car was total write off ..............

I got call asking me to visit service ... I saw a wreck over far side of the yard and thought .... strange - looks familiar .. then realised it was my car.
I walked away to be quiet and compose myself for the expected 'discussion' ............... went back and spoke with service owner.

We spent next 3 days touring the car marts for him to replace the car like for like ... unfortunately Festoo versions were to order and not common. I accepted a 1 year younger vehicle ...... but they had to swap the engine parts over to the new one then tune her to same as the old.

In Tallin - Estonia.

Especially if your insurance does not cover you when your property is in the charge of someone else (which would be a fun argument!)...
Hmm, my home insurers, Saga, policy with Lloyd’s, say it’s a vehicle so not insured. Classing an outboard engine as a vehicle is total nonsense, and I will start the complaint process if they persist with this view. Also verbally they said exactly what was commented on above,, but nothing to that effect in their written communication.

Also the outboard servicing outfit say their insurance does not cover theft of customers engines, which does somewhat surprise me.
Certainly a question to ask when considering someone to service an outboard.
