Stolen boats..

Never a day goes by without my getting an email notification of a stolen boat from www.stolenboats.org.uk some days I get several.
These are obviously being shipped abroad either on their own trailers or in containers. Surely therefore every one of these spotted should be a 'case of suspicion' and before being allowed to leave the UK should be checked against the list maintained by stolenboats.org.uk

Irishmen use them as drug smuggling boats to out run the Customs & Excise.
 
There is a thread running on a narrowboat forum at the moment that suggests that with the price of steel rising because of demand from China and India, that at least some of them are being chopped for scrap ..

One of the narrowboat members cites a story of a dodgy scrapyard next to a marina on the canal who was busted for lifting narrowboats out in the dead of night and chopping them ... There's no official confirmation , so may just be hearsay ....

I'm not sure if i'm allowed to link to it , being that its another forum and a canal one at that , but if someone confirms i can , i will ...

Yes! you can link to another posting or websit especially when it is part & parcel of your posting. However, sounds like an urban myth to me just like the Alsatians and Chinese Restuarants. Everyone's heard the story, no one can cite positive evidence.

Hi, I imagine that you know Ditone? An NB that's been on the Thames since she was built. In fact the first time I came through Teddington was on board her, as a guest /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

In fairness I do actually like narrow boats and plan to do the midlands again sometime soon, last did this area as a boy scout about 20 odd years ago....BUT it just would not be the same doing it on the Thames
 
Ha Ha !! You were never a scout !!

I've done a narrowboat trip on the Thames , it was a right laugh until the engine conked out and we crashed into the piles outside DB Marine at Cookham ....

Holiday went downhill from then on ....

But seriously, the Thames is a big river , there's room for everyone , everyone can enjoy it ....

I'm not just saying this because it's the party line , Rich will tell you , i speak my mind , it's just because i meet such a cross section of the boating public, cruisers, narrowboats , you name it , and invariably they all seem to be fairly good natured.

Ok, sure the narrowboats moan about the ' plastics , jelly moulds, gin palaces etc ' , but then the cruisers moan about the 'ditch crawlers , the great unwashed ,Rosie and Jim etc ' , from what i can tell , it's all fairly good natured and no malice is evident.

I appreciate that there can be problems when there are 3 70ft narrowboats taking up the room of 8 cruisers , but the Agency has recently introduced a 'Moor Alongside' scheme , where any boat can ask at any lock for a sticker to go in their window informing other boats that it is OK to moor alongside as the general concensus was that people don't like to ask because refusal often offends. We have given quite a lot out to narrowboats , but there's always room for improvement.

The idea of the stickers is a good one but it just isn't working. However many you've given out I've only seen a handful actually on display.
If it was down to me I would make rafting at busy periods a mandatory requirement subject to reasonable caveats.

In fact I suggest that next year the EA actually embed the Licence Plate in the centre of the sticker ! That way peeps will have to dispaly it or, if they cut it out, we will know they are awkward types! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually, with my draft, mooring alongside a narrow boat can be quite useful!

However, there's nothing more galling than a row of narrow boats nose to tail with 5 to 10 foot gaps in between them.

So they were kicked out the church? the does not surprise me!

Chris and Vic were the leaders until I read about Vic in the local paper that was the last we saw of him!

I have to say it was all good fun at the time, dont know if I would have the patients to be a leader in todays society so all credit to you!
