\'Stinkies\' latest craze

The 'stinkies' are at it again, with their crazed plans for Half-A-Race at the end of June. It certainly looks like they'll be disturbing almost everyone's summer somewhere.....

Although quite where they'll 'pit stop' at Oban is unclear, for they won't be able to use the Ferry Terminal at all, at all.

All they'll leave behind is a long trail of greasy oil cans, upset locals, and a nasty smell. Probably less than a quarter of 'em will stay the course - the rest will certainly need towing in. Get your Lloyds' Open Forms and tow-ropes ready, guys!

I'm sticking pins in effigies already.....

Arny will probably beat the lot of them in his little Merry Fisher - he will be plugging along carefully, determined to complete the course, while a war of attrition is going on around him as Xtreme racing machines implode / explode / break up / break down in another classic 'Hare and the Tortoise' racing saga.

No one really goes "round Britain" unless they take in Muckle Flugga in the north [60º 51' 20"N 0º 53' 10" W] or to be more technically correct, the small islet to its north of Muckle Flugga called "Out Stack".

Never mind Rockall, it doesnt even go round Northern Ireland!

Mind you, to do that it would have to go round Eire as well. Do you think that's ruled out by the RYA to avoid upsetting the Paddies?

Anybody know if Ireland is part of the geographical area called the British Isles? Often wondered because "British Isles " is not synonemous with UK.

Northern Ireland's not part of Britain either [much to some Rev'd's disgust!]. If you look at your passport you'll see you are a British citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland. Britain is England, Scotland and Wales [not Rockall!] and not CIs either. British Isles on the other hand is a geographic term which does include the island of Ireland.

As I understand it:

Great Britain: The big island containing most of England, Wales and Scotland

The British Isles: Great Britain, island Of Ireland, Isle of Man Scottish islands etc

UK: A political thing called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

So I guess 'Round Britain' could mean the island of Great Britain, or the British Isles.

Confused, you will be in the next edition of Soap!

Actually the "British Isles" is not an officially recognised term in any legal or inter-governmental sense. It is without any official status. Time to come up with a new name /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Absolutely - that's why I said it was a geographic term. By convention, geographically 'British Isles' includes everything [though actually not CIs and probably not Rockall either!], but you're right, the convention is probably outdated now, and given Britain's unfortunate[!] history in Ireland, a new term would be useful.

Well yes but I think on this occasion we should give our fellow boat owners a little bit of sympathy. Afterall this is their last year of freedom because from November there is going to be an awful lot of plastic gin palaces being converted into floating caravans. Just think no more queues at the fuel pontoons, the Solent will only be half full and those who use it quietly sailing along, ah bliss /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It happens that the Britain/ British Isles/ Great Britain thing has been done to death in other forums I post to. Basically, the poster who said that

British Isles = group of islands NW of France
Great Britain = mainland of England, Scotland and Wales
United Kingdom of UK and NI = political entity that does not include the Republic of Ireland

is quite correct.

Incidentally, the Irish should be delighted it's called the British Isles; they (and the other Celtic people) have the best claim to be the original Britons. I and a lot of other people posting here are probably a combination of Saxon and Viking (Viking Viking or Norman Viking)!

The only bit people have wrong is that "British Isles" is a perfectly well-defined geographic term in all the gazetteers I know of.

The only problem is what does "Round Britain" mean? If you take the first or third, you've got to go round Rockall, the second means you can stay inshore as much as you fancy; you can go through the Pentland Firth and between Penzance and Scilly, saving a LOT of distance!
