Still flooded.

OOI, what is the point of that sea defence?

The ground rises to above high and flood level within a few hundred yards of the foreshore. The land behind the sea wall has little or no agricultural value.
No one lives in ghe flood cell...

Why bother?

Precisely. If the Environmental Agency and those before it stopped building out into the river we would have more river and less floods. The Orwell is now half the width it used to be:-(

I am not certain we would have less floods as the primary source of flood water is tidal surge so the extra few cubic meters of flood area would be insignificant..

However it would save a lot of money, and the area would revert to salt marsh which is rather pretty in its own way.

But it wouldn't be a few cubic meters. It would be twice what we have now.

HH are doing their best.
They have almost filled in between College By & Shotley
I went aground twice there yesterday @ almost LW

Were you sailing within the channel or some way outside? There never is much water there but a yacht should be OK at ordinary low tide I would have thought.

Read it its quite clear :encouragement: I do know the river contours well :)

Yes I had assumed too much. I assumed you meant Shotley Horse or Shotley Cardinal. I never considered you would sail across Shotley Spit at low tide and I should have confirmed your course before making any comments.

beating from Collimer down river

That is quite a way from Shotley! How did you manage to go aground between Colimer and No 1 or even just past No 1? You have 5.4 metres there and no need to worry about contours unless of course you were tacking across the channel which seems a big ask while beating. Clearly I haven't understood your post.
