The pre packed 100mm seem perfect to carry on board , with no messing about trying to measure the set amount, so what can be the difference with these and outboard 2 Stroke.

The chain saw oil is possibly designed for hotter running in an air cooled saw, i would imagine an outboard motor runs cooler due to its water cooling, don't know if its true, just a thought.

It depends on wether the oil is semi synthetic or synthetic or even old fashioned mineral .This effects the dilution ratio .Syn being weaker as it can stand it doesn’t break down as quickly so keeps it’s lubrication with weaker ratios.,See what the manufacturer ( of the 2T motor ) says in the manual.
It ain’t that simple with 2T s to sub A N Other oil and use like for like ratios .
A syn too strong ratio will foul the plug ,and leave a deposit on the crown , start clogging ports etc as well as smoke like hell .A mineral too weak = ring wear is excessive.

It is 2 stroke oil not chain saw oil. Plenty of small stihl engines out there. It goes in my truly ancient flymo every year which gets zero maintenance and starts first pull 90% of the time.

yes i know that! The OP simply said Stihl, they are used in lots of chain saws,
most chain saws or flymo engines use 2t oil, i simply meant they are air cooled and run hotter than a water cooled engine.

I have added 2 stroke OB oil for mercury to a stihl blower fuel mix -seems to work as far as I could tell.

I agree 2 stroke oil for air cooled engines is not the same as for a water cooled outboard
Its not like the stuff for water cooled outboards is particularly expensive (well it wasn't when I last bought some).

Buy the proper outboard stuff Decant some into good small drinks bottles that you get when you buy a Tesco or Morrisons meal deal and use those. The volume will be on the side of the bottle. If you have never bo a meal deal like this then do so they are good value and you get a free bottle

Surely at the point of ignition the temperature with be the same on both types of 2 stroke.
I have put standard engine oil in my chainsaw and while smoking a bit it did it no harm

I believe in horses for courses. The texture of quality chainsaw 2str oil is very different from that of quality OB oil. You only have to put your hand in the telltale of an outboard to feel how cool it runs. I wouldn't put my hand on the fins of a chainsaw when it has been working hard. Huge difference in running temperatures. Also, given that they run in the sea, I imagine that there are probably better anti corrosion additives in the OB oil.

Thank you for all the replies , i have no doubt the Stihl oil is good , but they are made diferently so i am sticking to what plumbs says ,. What i cant understand
is why does no one make the same as stihl ie fixt set sizes.

I don't understand what the reason or justification would be for not using the TCW3 oil that has been certified by the manufacturers for use in outboard engines?

last year I ran my Tohatsu 9.8 exclusively on Aspen 2T it seemed very happy.
Fed up with stripping outboard carbs and putting them in the ultrasonic cleaner.

That is all fine, by why then not use Aspen's TWC3 certified oil for your water cooled motor?
