I posted this on PBO but only a few replies from lounge buddies so thought it may be better here .
Soooooo , the steering is stiff . Once a year i pack the wheel side of the loom with grease and have done so again but its not done the trick . The steering has always been stiff but this time its silly ( the outboard moves fine without the loom attached ) Anyway i went down today and looked again at the out board end again and the seal from the arm had worked loose from the loom , I'm not sure when this happened and have not noticed it before so it could have been that way for years or just a few days . ( can you guess i dont know alot about injuns :o )
My question is , can i some how lube the bit where the movey rod thingy goes in and out or do i need a new loom ? I have tried getting grease in there by smearing the movey rod thing and then winding it in with the seal pulled out of the way but after 2 hours there was no real effect .
Also where the loom meets the threaded type thingy that the movey bit goes into there is a nut . Can i take this part off and just pack it with grease or will things go flying out and fall in the river and stuff like that ?

steering cable

Try this, undo the plastic terminal at the steering box end, near the wheel, and then stand the cable as high as possible, with a plasticine funnel around it, pour in thin oil and allow it to perculate down the inner cable, when the oil has gone reconnect and work the helm from left to right to see if it gets any easier. If not then get a new cable.

As per omega2
Plus , whislt an oppo stands on top of the boat pouring in some chicken soup (must be corn fed) down the placcy funnel, work tother end (the rod thinghy end) back and forth innit.
If this fails like Omy said get a new un
However, the friction will warm up the soup.

Will 3 in 1 do ?
The old boy is back in hospital Major . Not heard any news yet :( He had an op and was ok for about six months and then went down hill again .

Well i wasnt able to fill the plastic bit by holding it up but filled it three times fitted it back in place and turning the wheel pulled it up into the box thingy . The box thingy was ouzing out oil and it was still no better . I took the rod end apart as much as i could and oiled that aswell . Both ends seemed ok but its still stiff and not getting any better . I cant work out why if both ends show no sign of decay why the middle part should have any as its a sealed unit

J - has the armoured cable been pinched or nipped ever ? If the 'working end' is reasonably well oiled, then a source of friction could be higher up the cable.

It looks fine and as far as i am aware never even had a knock . Thats tomorrows job though . If i could see why its doing it then i would just buy a new one but i cant and its annoying me now . Plus playing with boats and grease and oil and stuff is fun :D
BTW i had a fish and chip lunch on the boat and while waiting for the fish i flicked through a YBW mag they had there and you where in it , a few of you where .

Don't know if this will help, but I've had this problem before. I used to have a 16 footer with a Mercury 50 on the back and steering it was a nightmare. I didn't repair this myself but it turned out that the steering cable was way too long for the boat. To 'lose' the unwanted length a previous owner had looped the cable around in a (twin) circle. With the correct length cable, problem solved.

Hope it helps. Stu

I went back down today and checked the cable and it was ok so i carried on filling the tube with oil and working the wheel . I got 200ml of 3in1 into it ( not sure how much actually stayed in ) and it seems to be getting better . More oil needed i think .
