Sticky binoculars.

My binoculars went sticky for a number of years but are now progressively less sticky and are almost back to normal. Worth waiting a bit maybe.

you can soften and remove the sticky ruberised paint with meths. Takes a bit of rubbing but it does work - had to do it on the plastic dash etc of my toy car. You can restore the original finish afterwrds with an aerosol from Halfords

had to take this approach on my Canon bins and a Google tablet awaits treatment..

Had same issue - most solvents made the problem worse. Either cover entirely with insulating tape or I coated with a clear polyurethane varnish which worked.

Thanks for the responses, have given Mistroma's suggestion a go - although it wasn't Cif Power and Shine but Cif Lemon Cream Cleanser.

Well you want it to smell nice don't you !

Just a brief test on one side as I'd got it in stock - - - can report it seems to work.

Rubbed a tiny bead with kitchen towel over a reasonably flat area - - the sticky gunge came off leaving a smooth surface behind.

Maybe the stickyness will come back but in the meantime seems to work.

Will report back if it works with the rest of it.
Glad it looks promising. Pretty certain I tried the Cif cream thinking it would be better. I think it worked a bit but the neat Power & Shine type was better. The sticky stuff rolled off with a little rubbing. I expected the mildly abrasive cream to be better than just liquid. I just wish I could confirm the brand I used. Certainly marketed as something to cut through grease in the kitchen. I spray it on neat to a dry object and only rinse after the sticky layer runs off (assuming it does ?).

Reporting back after cleaning the old bino's with Cif Lemon cream cleaner.

Method, applied a bead to kitchen towel and rubbed onto small patch on bino's till sticky goo started to dissolve. Removed excess cleaner and goo with clean kitchen towel and polished with same till surface dry and appeared with dull shine. On some area's had to go over twice.

No stickyness left on bino's and certainly looks better - will see if it comes back.

The surface that's left does not have the rubbery feel that it had before - makes me wonder if previous surface was sprayed on in manufacture and just degrades with UV/age.
