Lighter fluid is often used for this purpose in the exhibition industry. Letraset make something for removing the glue, also Label remover (cpc.co.uk). You need to check whether these are suitable for use on fibreglass.

Agree.. but be careful with the heat gun. I suggest you use your hands directly to pull the numbers off, and if you overdo it on the sticky, you will likely know it. Use a waving-around till something happens, rather than just keeping the blow straight on. Once you get an edge started, try to direct the airflow straight into the gap being created between sticky stuff and the hull. You shouldn't need a scraper.
If you are going to put new numbers on, they should be 'floated' into place on a film of water - formed with an old washing up liquid squeezy bottle, with a little w.u.l in it, so it is a bit bubbly. When nicely placed, press firmly and the new numbers will settle down and this is the only way to get them on with no bubbles, they having been smoothed away whilst sitting on the water film. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
