Word has it that Hardy are considering using these engines on their 36 footer from next year. What do the forumites think of this power unit? Not sure which variant/power output they are planning to use

Royal Marines use them in their mid size assault boats. Mid mounted serving jet drives. They like them! They are extremely quiet from the outside and I should imagine the same or better noise suppression could be used on pleasure craft. Cheers Simon.

Couple of thoughts on this. Firstly, whilst I have no direct experience of these engines, I did have a long chat with a guy on the berth next to me at Gosport last summer. He had re-engined his Lochin 33 with Steyrs and was very happy with them. Like most sport fisher types, he used his boat every weekend and would go out in all sorts of crap, and he was very pleased with the reliability, quiet running and economy.

Secondly, I was having a chat with the Hardy chap at Southampton last week about this very issue. As I understood it, they had engined the boat show 36 with Steyrs as a custom fit for a customer, and also partly because the Perkins lumps they used to install were not being made any more cos of emission regs. He declared they were quite happy to discuss engine choices with customers - offering options of Steyr, Nanni, Yanmar and others in the 250 - 300 hp range.

I think that in that boat, the 260hp Steyrs would be a great option, although some of the new Nannis are looking very good as well.

Yeah - same discussion. I have the Perkins Sabres in mine and so far (300 hours) very good engines. BTW, there is a recall on one aspect - the fuel return pipe and the oil feed pipe to the fuel pump have been getting brittle fractures at the banjo connection and Finnings are paying to have them all replaced with flexible tubing. The other interesting aspect on the Steyers is that Hardy want to get away from gas on the 36 and the Steyrs can have a genset built into the flywheel so you are pumping charge into what I guess will be a large bank of batteries - thence the inverter route for cooking and so on. I admit not to understanding what this gives you over the alternators on a conventional set up but maybe someone can enlighten me.
