Hi all,

I'm quite interested in this Hardy Commodore 36 (https://uk.boats.com/power-boats/2009-hardy-commodore-36-9524854/) but am wondering about the Steyr 250 hp diesel engines. Are there any known issues with them? Is it a problem to get them serviced? Are parts expensive / difficult to obtain?
The boat has a lot of what I'm looking for but I'm concerned that the engines might be a maintenance issue.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Steyr aren’t so common in the U.K. but my understanding is that they are decent motors and there is a sole distributor in the U.K. so getting parts should be doable.

Great boats and that is a nice example but I should declare a degree of bias as we have one and we know the owners. Ours has Perkins engines so parts are no issue and are cheap as chips. I don’t recall the owners of the one you are looking at ever having an issue getting what they need for servicing etc.

Thanks @Greg2

Steyr used to make engines for BMW. May be still do, or may be even a part of BMW now.
Steyr made engines and vehicles for Mercedes, the G-Wagen is a Steyr design, they are a design and manufacture arm of Mercedes, they also made the Pinzgauer 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles for the British Army to replace the Landrovers

Steyr no longer makes the Pinzgauer. A Brit company bought the designs and assets and the vehicles were built in the UK. Not sure if they still do? Magna-Steyr has a decent assembly business in Austria. They built a variety of products over the years for many, including BMW and Mercedes. They also built the Jag iPace until recently. The Steyr company is a specialist engineering business.

That would be the company near Falkirk, they had a design for an armoured 6x6 Pinzgauer. The company I was involved with back in the early 1990s were looking at using the rolling chassis from the 6x6 as a platform for surveillance vehicles, eventually we settled on the Unimog as the Pinzgauer was just too small and the cost of the rolling chassis of the Pinzgauer was steep, the 4x4 came in at £50k and the 6x6 was approaching £70k back then.

The Palfinger cranes came from Steyr too, I believe the same company in Falkirk took over the designs, at the time we were talking with them they were the sole distributer for Steyr in the UK.

Yep, I knew the 2 guys who owned the business. We were in competition for a couple of Army bids. Good blokes. The Pinz had great mobility, but the engines (Vw) were a bit weak, so the vehicle had limited load capacity. The Mog was a decent truck too.
