Combined engine/gen for hi-spec sailboat

With increasing quantities of electrical equipment aboard arealtively small boat, larger amounts of power is needed to propel the boat and to provide the necessary electrical supply.

So, instead having a single engine and a separate add-on generator, the two engines are supplied and fitted right from the start, and balanced to ensure lateral stability. This means that both should be the same size, and of course this handily means a lot more manoauvrability in port with TWO engines available rather than just one.

These days a similar sized lump that once gave only 50 hp can now provide 200 or more, so it's an ideal opportunity to spec these, with which the boat will actually be able to approach and even exceed max displacement speed. For economy, you may also want a backup generator rather than running the main engines, and the performance with engines on may mean that you can actually save money on the initial purchase by not speccing the mast or sails. Good eh!

The balls rolling, some more details please!

My accountant has taken a look at this and thinks in principle it to be a watertight money saving scheme. However what is this luxury tax you talk about, what "french" agro do you get (Although he did say we could've taken that as red!) and finally can you recommend a leasing company to contact that has experience in this kind of dealing.

Now I'm getting 24hr butterflies!

Revised list #1

Here is a revised list of extras with my reasons for getting rid and keeping in

OUT

Teak deck (Looks shabby if not maintained regularily)
Electric winches (Was always teetering on the edge of being booted anyway!)
2 pushpit seats (Why spoil her beautiful lines!)
Generator
Water maker
Aircon (Was never going to be used until the 3/4 season of sailing anway, can be just as easily retrofitted at just the same price. Whilst installing them now means extra maintenance and extra weight.)
Engine spares kit (I'll get 'em when I can't sue!)

IN
Extra galley console and microwave (Gc got to be their for retro extras swmbo=mw)
Blue Hull (I really like it!)
Electric Winlass (I've given up the winche what more do you want!)
7ft Dinghy with centre console and snap davits (Kids toy and it's shrunk 2ft)
Autopilot (Generally I' ve been advised to keep it.)
GPS plotter and radar with receiver at helm (I've gotta have 'em so why not have the best ones!)
Extra 12v sockets (Hair driers, Mobile phones, do I need to go on?)
VHF Radio (Essential.)
Toilet discharges to holding tank/overboard ('cos I wanna shit in the marina without shitting in the marina!)
Interior locking box (money/passport/credits cards!)
15" tft screen with cd player and PS2 (6 speakers below deck none above(No one wants to listen to level 5 of Tekken 4 whilst sipping G and T)
Horseshoe buoy (Essential.)
Liferaft. (Ditto.)
Lifejackets and Harnesses (Already have these.)
Radar reflector (Have you seen the size of some of those container ships!)
Navtex and Weatherfax (Another useful GADGET!)
Sprayhood (Essential)
Additional battery capacity and smart alternator regulator
Handheld GPS/VHF/Flares/Binochulars (Just in case!)
Set of his and hers foul weather gear (Posey ones; Mustoe for me. Henri Lloyd for her!)
Warps (So I've still got a boat!)
About 6 Fenders (No fender baskets though. To go in anchor locker and lazerette)
Good medical kit. (For hangovers. Joke.)
2 Buckets (For hangovers!)
Acrylic board for tender outboard. ('cos wooden ones snap. Don't they Phil!)
2 Bilge pumps (God forbid!)
Log/Charts/Almanac
Gold pseudo joined up lettering "Careless whisper" (Because it'll look great against the blue match the gold ticking and It's always been my dream!)

If I've missed ANYTHING let me know. I don't think I've been too frivolous this time do you?

Re: Revised list #1

Hey Steve,

Reality has stuck! Much more sensible list, but I'd add a few more fenders, and a bow fender to protect the lovely blue hull.

What happened to the heating then? I'd have that high on the list.

Re 12v sockets, make sure they are wired to handle their max - I think its 10 amps, which is only 120W after all

Re: The balls rolling, some more details please!

The french leasing scheme is normally offered by the french dealers whenever a Brit makes a new boat enquiry.

Given Moody's march ever upwards into the real of luxury yachts (the 38 kept them grounded in reality I think, and its sad its going), they must have lots of buyers wanting to use this scheme. From the research I did 6 months ago it seems legit. Try a google search - I found lots of learned articles on the subject.

Re: The balls rolling, some more details please!

has anybody suggested beefing up the 12 volt system?

ie

-bigger alternator (or second alternator)
-smart charge regulator
-Extra house batteries
-possibly gelcel batteries
-inverter for occasional 220v use

Keep the Teak Campaign

Keep the teak decks! They don't take that much looking after and set the boat apart plus they're great for bare feet.

Also, keep the engine spares - if you can't fix the engine yourself at least you've probably got the spare part you need on board so that someone else can without having to get 30 miles to the nearest dealer/solicitor.
