So why are they ditching the 38?

1. Nobody wants to buy it (doesn't bode well for resale prices)
2. They made some sort of mistake in the design which they are going to correct with the brand new 38.5.
3. The moulds are knackered and they can't amortise a new set.
4. They don't make money on it, and so will charge you through the nose for a 'special'.

Cautionary tale.

I have a friend who ordered a big Benny with all the extras. When it was delivered it floated below its marks. He took them to court, and they had to go back to the designer to get a lighter but deeper keel (so same righting moment) designed and fitted. Which cost him legal fees and the use of the boat for a season. When he did start using it all sorts of problems arose with the 'extras' because they'd never built that many of them into that model before and ended up playing the installation by ear. More legal action to get them to rectify the faults.

It was three years after taking delivery, that he finally got the boat sorted.

Re: So why are they ditching the 38?

I suspect the end of the M38 is all part of their strategy to be a niche manufacturer of near-luxury yachts. The 38 is too near to the real world in terms of pricing!

I doubt its mould is knackered as I think it was only launched in 2000, or was this just a new deck moulding on the old hull.

Re: So why are they ditching the 38?

The man from Moody's suggested to me some months ago that the model wouldn't sell well because it only had one heads! Also i didn't reckon much to the saloon "bench seats". A bit 1970's I thought!

Re: Blimey, I\'m a subject!

Steve.

If you are still keen on a new M38 there's one in Swanwick which Moody's are selling. However, it a demonstrator and was built in 2001.

I looked at it earlier in the season and was tempted. However i wasn't keen on the interior and decided to go for the earlier 38 model I had been looking at. Got a good one eventually but not many of these around either!

However - heres the good bit- Moody's were prepared to do a "good deal" on the advertised price and after a bit of haggling they offered it at £112,000 (asking £126,000), plus extras at "cost price".

This was in May and I think it's still for sale - so you may be able to squeeze a bit more out of them

Re: List please!!

Sorry I left out the boring ones! (Oh dear, I'm going to get my head caved in now by people who believe me to be wreckless!) What I mean is, the safety feature will of course be added. I just decided that I wanted to list the boys toys!

In fact I'm going to use your list to make sure I havn't forgot anything. If anyone has anything else to add please do! I still have a first born son that I can sell to raise cash!

Re: So why are they ditching the 38?

Moody's are not going to build anything below 47ft, a sales & marketing decision. They have sold extremely well with back orders stretching to the end of the year. 2 per month has been the rate for a while. The range will be 47, 54, 64 I am told that Princess also built at the same factory are moving up in size as well. The current 38 was a brand new design from Dixon, the single heads to us was a plus as 2 in 38ft always struck us as tight. The HR39, just rreplaced by the 40 was also single heads. Have Moodys made a mistake I think so but the last time they made that sort of mistake was when the 28 was stopped and resale value of the boat went up significently. Who knows though if the Iraq situation goes pear shaped then they may re-evaluate their thinking, it will be interesting to see if the molds are kept.

Re: List please!!

Your list my comments annotated by ###

Teak deck###looks nice but I am told by those who have cruised in warmer climates they are not good news.
In mast furling### yes but go for Hood Vertec fully battened sail
Blue Hull###you must have deep pockets, if you ding it colour matching will be a professional job plus a pain to keep looking nice
Electric winlass###yes
Electric winches### too much power required the boat comes with the genoa winches lewar 48s
9ft dinghy with centre console and snap davits###do you really want a power boat
Auto-pilot###essential
Radar/GPS plotter Receiver at helm###put receiver on port side under the windscreen and sprayhood at the helm you will be inclined to take your eye off the horizon
Wife wants blue cockpit upholstery (I've told her to sod off!)###why not(Joke dear! Honest!)
Cockpit table###essential
2 Pushpit seats and 1 pulpit### why they just take up useful space on the stern, by the time you have horseshoe, fender basketr, outboard, ariels you wont have room
Hot and cold transom shower### sensible if you are going to warmer climates but water eaters
Hide covered wheel### yes makes a difference

Below Decks

15" TFT screen linked to 10 cd/dvd stacker and PS2, six speakers below, 2 above.(Funnily enough I have some of those!)#'## not above please!!!
4.5 Kw Whisper generator###get it later
Aircon Aft and forward birth###get it lkater
Central heating###get ducting in and then do a deal on the rest later
Water maker###later
Microwave###later

Radar/GPS Plotter Nav system (Hopefully with fish finder!)###keep it simple to start with have a chat with Ian at Moodys and Greenham and listen to what they say
Few extra 12v sockets###invaluable
VHF Radio###simrad do a nice one
Toilet to discharge to holding tank/overboard###yes
Locking box###fits nicely behaind the companion way.

Re: List please!!

Steve,

Some comments on your kit list kit,

Teak deck - good - better grip than GRP - looks good - less glare under tropical sun
In mast furling -bad - fully battened mail gives better sailing, lazy jacks + ball bearing cars give faster furling - raises CofG = les stability - needless complexity -
Blue Hull - why? expensive to repair damage - ages badly
Electric winlass - V Good - vital if you get proper size ground tackle
Electric winches - Bad - if you can handle boat without then why? If you can't are you safe if they fail? Eats batteries - too slow, check line speed under load.
9ft dinghy with centre console and snap davits - Why? - You do realise that marinas (well at least MDL) now charge for real boat length at £500/m your davits will cost you around £1000 pa. windage, theft, poor view astern.
Auto-pilot - Vital, unless you like standing under a cold shower at two in the morning.
Radar/GPS plotter Receiver at helm - Good - go and talk to Phil at Diverse in Port Hamble - does all the big boys (volvo etc.) but still cares about small jobs very good advice.
Wife wants blue cockpit upholstery (I've told her to sod off!)(Joke dear! Honest!) - who cares?
Cockpit table
2 Pushpit seats and 1 pulpit - Neutral -
Hot and cold transom shower - Ditto
Hide covered wheel - nice

Below Decks

15" TFT screen linked to 10 cd/dvd stacker and PS2, six speakers below, 2 above.(Funnily enough I have some of those!) - why -
4.5 Kw Whisper generator - later
Aircon Aft and forward birth - later
Central heating - vital for Uk
Water maker - later
Microwave -
Extra galley console
Radar/GPS Plotter Nav system (Hopefully with fish finder!) - see above - don't put radar up mast - put it on post at stern.
Few extra 12v sockets
VHF Radio - Get DSC unit with second station at helm, great when in tight marinas and you find your berth full, you try steering and going below at the same time
Toilet to discharge to holding tank/overboard - yes
Locking box - why - unless a proper armoured gun safe - most offer no real security and just invite damage in break in.

Might I suggest Navtext, say ICS 6+.

PS

Side gates to go with detachable ladder
additional up haul, with inmast furling you cannot get to the top of the mast from the genoa uphaul, the topping lift is a fixed wire controled via the boom and dropping an inmast is a pain...

switchable cockpit speaker for the VHF.

Visiball radar reflector.

engine spares kit - from Marine Power of Bursledon.

Re: Washer dryer/Dishwasher or.....

>>>>>Have you any idea how big a Moody38 is? Dishwasher/Washer dryer??!!!!
I'd be more concerned how big the engine compartment on the M38 is at the moment. [You naturally took a long hard look at this at SBS]. Bill Dixon will have planned it so all the user-maintainable bits will be accessible. Once you've jammed all the extras in, you may need to limbo dance to change an oil filter.

>>>>>Dishwasher/Washer dryer??!!!!What do you think I've got Ange for.
Don't bother getting married next time. Just find a woman you hate and buy her a house! (joke, honest)

Re: List please!!

Provisional list.

GOOD IDEAS
Teak deck, Blue Hull, Electric winlass, Auto-pilot, Wife wants blue cockpit upholstery (I've told her to sod off!)(Joke dear! Honest!), Cockpit table, 2 Pushpit seats and 1 pulpit, Hide covered wheel, Few extra 12v sockets, VHF Radio,
Toilet to discharge to holding tank/overboard, Central heating, 4.5 Kw Whisper generator

MAYBE NOT SO HOT
In mast furling - fully battened main with lazyjacks or Dutchman system is simpler and less likely to jam with the sail half-unfurled. "Careless Whisper" will be more stable without that extra weight up the mast.
Electric winches - you're getting soft! Better to learn how to steer to make it easy on your winch grinders.
Radar/GPS plotter Receiver at helm - better to have a repeater screen nearer your line of sight or you'll end up steering with eyes down all the time. Also when a yacht heels it's usually more comfortable to steer from the windward seat
Aircon Aft and forward berth, Water maker- better to fit nearer the time you head off for the sun than to fit now and not use for years [also check the space in the engine compartment]
Radar/GPS Plotter Nav system - but remember to learn the traditional nav stuff with paper charts, too.
Hot and cold transom shower -very handy for washing the dinghy.

Re: List please!!

We spent a good twenty minutes looking at the engine compartment with Bruce Hastie of Moody. The Air con and Generator will fit in no problem and we talked about the Microwave being sunk into the wall too, however we decided that it would be more prudent to leave a little more access to the engine and have a seperate galley console built under the stairs (lot of unused space) for the microwave and water maker with access to the gubbins under the floor taken into concideration.
