Sterndrive restoration

Can anyone help/advize about what to do with a volvo penta sterndrive that has been steelwire brushed to bare aluminum? Is there a way to ensure that any steel particles that could have contaminated it are either removed or treated? This to prep it for eventual painting. Also any steps to be followed before painting.

Alloy wheel cleaner that dissolves steel particles. Can't remember what it's called.

Thanks a lot for putting me on the right path! Now another related question:

I've got (what I think is a lot) of corrosion on my gimble pivot. Can I fill it with something like JB weld, or is there a better solution?

Before you paint it have you changed bellows etc.

No bellows yet, am down to bare metal on gimbal housing and want to prime, paint, but the pitting has me held up. I don't wanna use a product like JB weld if it could cause electrolysis or so.
