I stripped the cutlass bearing out of my boat which required unscrewing the housing from the stern tube, there was a non setting sealant between the housing and the fibreglass hull, I thinking was lead putty, does anyone know of a suitable non setting sealant I can put it back together with? I could use silicone but fear it will never come back out! I had a google but couldn't find anything.

I have always used Locktite 572 and never had a problem.

Sorry I mean for filling the void between the tube and the fibreglass hull, there's a tapered plate between the flange and the hull as it's at a different angle and the sealant goes in there too, some sort of non setting mastic is what I'm after

I looked up ct1 and looks like it's an adhesive sealant which if input in there would set and I wouldn't get it off again it was hard to get off with just the putty, I have used a molycote non setting silicone before but unsure how it would deal with water ingress over the years it would be between changes

They are fine with silicone, never had problem removing one sealed with silicone.

Correct sealant is flexible polysulphide such as Boat Life Caulk or Arbromast. Avoid using CT1 as it will be a PITA to unscrew in the future.

Cheers I've used boat caulk before and it's not the strongest adhesive so probably a good bet, there was a wooden wedge between the housing and the hill as they were at different angles and I had to smash it to get the housing off, this will be replaced with a plastic one so won't be able to do that again so need to ensure it will come off, it will be a few years before it will need to come off again
