Stern Glands - Deep Sea Seals or Traditional Type

Thank you all again for the information you have kindly bestowed. Based on such good useful information and further research I have decided and to go for the PSS. I always find it remarkable how much information there is on these subjects. With all of the links and information offered on this forum I am much better informed. I am sure there will be more questions as I come to install the new seal in Winter and I will update you all on how the process turns out.

Thank you and happy sailing for the rest of the season.

Others that have fitted a PSS have taken the precaution of fitting an additional collar fwd of the shaft collar to prevent the shaft collar slipping in the event of the grub screws slipping.
It costs nothing more than a pair of jubilee clips, and in no way compromises the proper fit and operation.

I have had my PSS for 2 seasons and no issues whatsoever.

i fitted a PSS seal last winter as im on a drying mooring and was fed up with 'burping' when i came to fit it was a bit tight to get it in, but as there was plenty of meat on the stern tube i just shortened it by 1'' without a problem. i am very happy with the seal and it saves fighting my way down the stern locker to burp

A bit late for you Bert, but there's a radice version of the volvo type, with a vent tube, so that needs no burping.
