I have to replace the stern gland stuffing material this winter - no adjustment left on gland. I was supplied with a graphite grease lubricated material, but I am sure I read somewhere recently that this would be bad for electrolytic corrosion, graphite being high in the electrolytic table. Can anyone confirm this? I think the original stuffing was a Teflon material - anyone know where I can get some more?

Most chandlers will now have the teflon type material, which is far superior in sealing and lubrication. But I've never hgeard of the corrosion problem and in fact have never seen it on the many, many stuffing boxes I've repacked.

Graphite is a form of the element Carbon - is electrolitically inert and non metallic. Graphite is an electical conductor. It shouldn't react with any metals.

Graphite is a good lubricant - because physically (on a microscopic level) it is made up of flat plates - which readily slide over eachother.

Don't know that that helps you with your stern gland. Good Luck.
