Stern drive problem

We were advised that our Volvo engine had seized up and would require replacement. It has also come to light when replacing the seized engine that the stern drive had also seized up. Can anyone tell me if the seized up stern drive could have been the problem and not the engine? The reason I ask is that in the process of disassembling the "seized engine" for spare parts, I have discovered the flywheel turns quite freely!!

since the engine is connected directly to the drive, drive seizes and engine won't turn. Take the drive off and if engine is fine, it will turn.

Yes, this could have been the problem.

Even when out of gear, the engine is still directly connected to the universal joint and upper gear set in the sterndrive.

Id say that whoever made that assumption doesnt know his engines and drives at all.

I have seen dpg drives smashed up in the top gearbox which in turn buries the gear into the casing , the engine stops and gives the impression the crank or pistons have seized as you cant turn the engine over from the crank pulley or the ring gear.

You then find all is ok after the drive has been disconnected making you wallet feel a lot better!

Id seek another opinion from whoever gave you that bad news.

Thanks to you all for replying on this. You've confirmed what we believe to have been the case after all! Will be seeking legal advice on this one now!

Seizure

A lot will depend on who you used to work on the engine and drive. A non marine experienced person could assume from car systems that the drive plate was a clutch and not realise that the short shaft between the engine and upper gearbox was in constant drive. I would suggest that this would be the core issue.

An experienced marine engineer should be aware of drive being a very likely cause of seizure and checked from the beginning.

pulling the drive should have given engineer a correct diagnosis and he should have come back to you and not just gone ahead and ordered very expensive parts.i asume when this matters cleared up u won't be reccommending him!!!!!

Although we had to pay up front for the recon engine we have yet to receive an invoice for the work - so he'll be bitterly disappointed when we don't pay it. Had we not demanded our old engine back (which he gave back very reluctantly) we would have been none the wiser! Hindsight is a marvellous thing and I wish now I had discussed it with this forum first!

I guess you have to look on the bright side. YOu've got a recon engine that should last the life of the boat and once the drive is repaired you'll have a pretty good system!
Once all the legal stuff is settled you may like to reveal the marine monkey's identity as a warning to others!

just what I was hoping

As far as I am aware he doesn't operate in the Essex area so you can breathe a sigh of relief! Obviously I don't want anyone else to be his victim, just how many others has he conned? If I'm allowed to I will reveal his identity after this has been sorted out.
