Stern drive lifting when reverse gear engaged.

Looking for advice on the problem of one of our drive legs lifts out the water when reverse gear is engaged. If we first go into ahead gear then astern the leg doesn't lift and is fine for the rest of the day but on the following morning its the same again.. We have Volvo AQAD40B engines in a Fairline Sedan 32. Any other advice, learning points or experiences of the Sedan 32 would be very much appreciated.
 
Probably a volvo 270/280 drive and the reverse gear latch is dodgy might just be the spring that has come adrift, not a difficult or expensive repair but much easier out the water.
 
Reverse latch seized up or springs broken or worse it's fallen off.
If seized it can be sorted in the water if your happy to go in and free it off.
 
If it's a 270 leg, that reverse locking latch is "fragile."
It sounds as if yours may just be gummed up, have you had it out for maintenance recently?
If not, good time to pull it out, check/replace bellows, seals etc, give it a good jetwash, a change of oil and a good paint with trilux.
I found using the spray stuff, although it isn't as good, does mean you can get a light coating over all those hideous little springs and things to stop tiny shells etc growing on them and stopping it working.
Also check the transom pin for corrosion, if it's worn then the latch may be slipping on it if it's not quite catching the first time?

My last problem was caused by a tiny stick lodged in the mechanism.

It should be a 280 leg as per your vessel being virtually identical to ours. I also have had a similar problem to diagnose but it seemed to only happen if you tried to force reverse when the revs are wrong - causing quite a 'clunk' which seemed to release the leg.

I can only assume that the locking mech/spring doesnt like the clunk which was caused and just let go. Ive found with letting the revs drop lower and then engaging reverse - i had no issues on our previous trip at all.

I'd guess the retaining springs would need a bit of adjustment to get it right though.
 
Thanks symondo I used your advice today and all seems well. She is afloat but managed to power wash a load of crud from round the drives as well so hopefully all should be ok now.
