Stencils

Seeing a recent post about putting a name on a lifebuoy reminds me I would like to get a stencil made with my boat's name and use it for marking things like oars, lifebuoys, outboards, crew etc.

Anyone know where I could get one cut? Nothing arty-farty, just plain lettering in something durable.

Dunno about having one cut, but we have two standard plastic stencil sets (3" and 4" high letters/numbers) that we use for marking our lifebuoys/tenders etc etc.

As far as I can remember we got them in Smiffs or a large office supplies place.

Dirt cheap and we've had 'em for around 15 years now. We use permanent marker pens and, even on the flubbers, this lasts for at least two years before needing a touch up. Far, far better than stick-on letters, that always deteriorate and leave a flithy sticky residue.

how about printing exactly what you want from the PC, glue that to some 4mm ply and getting involved with a coping saw? could tidy up with a file and/or needle files. Then you can have whatever font you want and you don't have to fart about lining the letters up each time.

There is a font called STENCIL that you can use. If you print the name of the boat on a sheet of A4 and stick it to a sheet of card or thin rubber or the like with some Pritt. Then cut out the letters with a sharp craft knife. I use rubber sandblasting stencil tape for this. The Stencil font will not fall apart when cut. Its designed for the job. You could get a sign shop to cut it for you. If you need the font PM me.

Anywhere near an arty/ crafty shop ?

The professionals used to use lamp-shade paper and then spray both sides with several coats of hair spray.

Lasts for ages..........if you keep them clean.

If you treat yourself to a stick on vinyl name for the boat transom, you can use the "negative" as a stencil, they last quite well if used carefully. Or you could just ask them to cut a stencil for you. Yep, it is dear...if you have kids at secondary school they may be able to make one for you if they are well in with the Technology Department - they often use vinyl cutters to demonstrate CADCAM.

Well, that was a great idea! Thanks to all.

Pulled a font down from here , printed it on 100 gsm paper and cut out with a Stanley knife. Off to buy spray paint (got a hoody already)

How about printing onto waterproof paper , I haven't tried it but appears to have a fairly durable consistency. I have used ordinary paper as stencil to spray a name on a dinghy.
