It's amazing what you can do when you work for a living instead of scrounging off the state.

A young lady in Victoria did her thesis on waste of food in Canada. She found that 71% of all food produced in Canada ends up in landfills, uneaten, except by rats . You say it is immoral or lacking in environmental responsibility to not waste?
Bull!
France has banned such wastage.
Scandinavians have banned the import of that which can not be repaired, and is teaching their youth to do the repairs .
I have found weathered, used plywood far more reliable than new stuff. If it was inclined to delaminate, it would have long ago. Not the case with new stuff.

Semi retired at 27 ! Amazing what you can do when you scrounge.
Consumers don't get to do that until they are much, much older. Amazing what you have to do to be a conformist consumer!

That may well be, but it doesn't change the fact that you still leech your cost of living off your fellow countrymen. You claim to be oh-so-independent and living an off-grid life away from commerce and industry, and yet you rely on the commerce and industry of others for your free ride. More hypocrisy and BS from BS.

The suggestion being you intend to not use pensions and seniors benefits when you qualify ?
Ya sure!

Can you tell me where on Quadra Island BC I can get my boat RNLI inspected, so the water will know enough to not come in, when they see the inspection sticker?
Perhaps they could also inspect and pass all my a canning jars, to make them sealed, in the only way possible.
I can just picture those microbes and molecules saying' This one is not RNLI passed ,so it's open house; cant possibly be sealed ,chow time boys."
LOL!
I don't believe any boat in BC or Canada for that matter has RNLI inspection, so they must all leak like hell, with no RNLI inspection ticket to scare the water away!
They cant possibly be airtight, unless RNLI says so?
LOL!
I have seen some pretty dense posts on the internet, but yours takes first prize!
LOL!
Thanks for the laughs, and thanks for so clearly demonstrating the abysmal foolishness of allowing bureaucracy to over ride reality.
Here we live in the free world ,where common sense is allowed to over ride bureaucratic foolishness, for the most part.
Condolences on your loss of the ability to go with common sense, instead of the bureaucratic foolishness you have so generously demonstrated .

Canadian Coast Guard does courtesy safety inspections. Have you ever had one?

LOL!! Straw man!!! LOL!!!! Baja lee shore!!!
I said nothing about it being immoral or lacking environmental responsibility not to waste, whether it be food or anything else. So, nice effort to try and deflect from my point, which was that you are a Benefit Scrounger living, not off the grid, but off the state.
Yes, it is amazing what you can do when you have the moral compass that lets you scrounge off the labour of those you profess to disdain.

The sad thing is that safety inspections by the RNLI are entirely voluntary, but people have become so accustomed to not thinking for themselves, that they willingly accept this sort of unnecessary bureaucracy to think for them. To my mind, safety on boats is based on seamanship, rather than a tickbox list of "safety equipment".

Ya sure, absolutely! As a functioning, contributing member of society, I will take whatever that society thinks my contributions have been worth. Wonder what the average Canadian would think you are worth, if they were asked.
Difference is, BS, that I have contributed. If I was an off-grid, anti-consumer, anti-industry warrior hero like you, I wouldn't stoop to taking corporate shilling [where do you think that money comes from, by the way?].
But no, you're a hypocritical Benefit Scrounger, aren't you.

Is it uneccesary bureaucracy? Paperwork was minimal and IIRC we got a small sticker.

The guy that checked our boat was a member of a nearby club, unable to go to sea any more but loved being around boats. Recently a widower, he spent a couple of hours on a nice well equipped boat, had a coffee and a bit of First Mates cake and a nice chat after the deed was done. He gave me a couple of good tips as well, simple things but really sensible.

He also sculled down to our swinging mooring from a nearby pontoon using a single oar at the transom-that is becoming a lost art.

He was doing a useful job-and one that kept him in touch with boating even though his sailing days were finished.

I take your point about good seamanship, of course that is most important.

But anothers eye on your boat may find something you have missed due to familiarity. Or even as in BS's case, contempt.

IMHO, of course............................

More nonsense of course. Plenty of people like to receive help from someone with experience in many things, not just boats, in order to make their life easier.
Not everyone is born a sailor or a smartarse. This thread proves it.......

Yes, "to make their life easier" and of course, it saves them from thinking for themselves.

Easier and safer for themselves and the people they take to sea. why is that a problem, its seamanlike commonsense for non smatypants people. Like when I take my car for its annual safety check. Or take my computer to an expert when its broken.....

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes, bah to the experts. Let's design our own planes, trains, automobiles, buildings, bridges, medicines, grow our own food, build our own liferafts......

Wait a minute; Brent doesn't rate them either

Not to worry, there's always the Canadian Coastguard, paid for by taxp_____ and operated by exp____ ;)

Oh well, at least I'm part of the way there. Designed our own house, and grow a lot of our own food. :D

It is a bit sad, but I feel the idea that BS is getting on a bit and is spending his time trying to convince himself that he has the ideal life. Constant repetition about how good it is and how he knows better than 99.9% of boatowners, which he 'proves' by misrepresenting events, or just making them up. It can't go on forever and will likely end uncomfortably. The more he slags off other people and their ways of life, the more he demonstrates his own insecurities.

In the event of a long overdue earth quake ,or other natural disaster, resulting in infrastructure break down ,Vancouver Island has a 3 day supply of food , max. Then self reliance becomes critical.
