It's amazing what you can do when you work for a living instead of scrounging off the state.

A young lady in Victoria did her thesis on waste of food in Canada. She found that 71% of all food produced in Canada ends up in landfills, uneaten, except by rats . You say it is immoral or lacking in environmental responsibility to not waste?

France has banned such wastage.
Scandinavians have banned the import of that which can not be repaired, and is teaching their youth to do the repairs .
I have found weathered, used plywood far more reliable than new stuff. If it was inclined to delaminate, it would have long ago. Not the case with new stuff.

Semi retired at 27 ! Amazing what you can do when you scrounge.
Consumers don't get to do that until they are much, much older. Amazing what you have to do to be a conformist consumer!

I don't believe any boat in BC or Canada for that matter has RNLI inspection, so they must all leak like hell, with no RNLI inspection ticket to scare the water away!

Canadian Coast Guard does courtesy safety inspections. Have you ever had one?

Ya sure, absolutely! As a functioning, contributing member of society, I will take whatever that society thinks my contributions have been worth. Wonder what the average Canadian would think you are worth, if they were asked.

Is it uneccesary bureaucracy? Paperwork was minimal and IIRC we got a small sticker.

The guy that checked our boat was a member of a nearby club, unable to go to sea any more but loved being around boats. Recently a widower, he spent a couple of hours on a nice well equipped boat, had a coffee and a bit of First Mates cake and a nice chat after the deed was done. He gave me a couple of good tips as well, simple things but really sensible.

He also sculled down to our swinging mooring from a nearby pontoon using a single oar at the transom-that is becoming a lost art.

He was doing a useful job-and one that kept him in touch with boating even though his sailing days were finished.

I take your point about good seamanship, of course that is most important.

But anothers eye on your boat may find something you have missed due to familiarity. Or even as in BS's case, contempt.

It is a bit sad, but I feel the idea that BS is getting on a bit and is spending his time trying to convince himself that he has the ideal life. Constant repetition about how good it is and how he knows better than 99.9% of boatowners, which he 'proves' by misrepresenting events, or just making them up. It can't go on forever and will likely end uncomfortably. The more he slags off other people and their ways of life, the more he demonstrates his own insecurities.

In the event of a long overdue earth quake ,or other natural disaster, resulting in infrastructure break down ,Vancouver Island has a 3 day supply of food , max. Then self reliance becomes critical.
