I've discovered our anchor windlass has been trying to escape. Our somewhat bodgily (by the previous owner? Surely not!) installed windlass is mounted on blocks of marine ply to raise it to the right height. The windlass is bolted to the wood, which is in turn bolted through the deck. In itself, the idea is fine. However, the bolts holding the ply to the deck haven't been fitted with washers, and the holes are so close to the edges of the blocks that 1) washers wouldn't really work and 2) the edges are starting to crumble anyway.

My idea is to get a plate of stainless made up to sit between the windlass and the wood, which would act as a huge washer, and also more evenly distribute the load from the bolts throughout the wood.

However, need to find someone to knock this up for us. As I see it, it should be fairly easy for someone with the right tools to do.

We're in Vathi at the moment, but are obviously mobile. Can anyone recommend someone in the area that could assist?

Phil is brilliant but he gets very busy. The solar panel arc he made for us is just perfect. Not wishing to diminish his potential future income but if he can't do it for a while and you are heading north, then Martin Crozier (Croz) in Corfu would also oblige. He has also done several jobs for us and is also highly recommended. Ring him on 0030 69799 04586 and he will come to your boat.

Have sent you PM

Shouldn't a communication concerning a service to fellow yachtsmen be shared with the rest of us? If the information is adverse, perhaps again we should be allowed to share it? If, as a third alternative you wish to only share it with one individual then I say "Shame on You!"

If I choose to reply to a post privately, I am quite within my rights. I have my reasons for doing so in this instance and do not intend to justify myself to you.

I wasn't talking about "your rights" but more your implied "responsibility" to the rest of the forum. I take it then that you don't consider yourself as being in any of the three situations I described? Would you tell me this deadly secret if I were on the next berth to you on the pontoon? What is it about your contribution that you fear doesn't stand up to the scrutiny of the rest of us, pray? "Possibly Libellous"? Being in an uninformed state, what else could I possibly think? If you know something about one of the recommended specialists, please speak out. Or, if you know of a better alternative, then if you're not prepared to divulge their details, why are you posting here at all? :(

Have to give Phil the thumbs up. He got the work done quickly and at a very reasonable price.

An unexpected consequence is the shiny piece of stainless over the piece of wood smartens up the bow of the boat no end!

I think Croz has now retired. He had developed a bad reputation for being very unreliable, despite the quality of his work. I understand he is passing requests over to two young guys who may have taken over his business. I watched them at work: they are keen but inexperienced and the results looked rough-and-ready.
