Steel Stern Tube

Looking for experience here please - my plans show each cutless bearing held in place by a set screw, this seems to be an open invitation to the screw/surround rusting & seizing. Does anyone know of a better way, do you use the prop shaft to ensure the two bearings are in alignment & what is the best way to protect the remaining bore?

Re: Steel Stern Tube

I have a steel stern tube supplied by Lancing Marine who also supplied the cutless bearing. The outer casing of the cutless bearing is made of Tufnol which cannot corrode though I think it may swell slightly..... Lancing's recommendation was to Araldite it into the tube and when the time comes to change it just saw and chisel it out. I haven't had to change it yet but I'm not looking forward to that when the time comes.... hopefully it won't need changing too often!
