Steel hull corrosion?

There was a steel boat on the hard at Rochefort, 35 ft?, likely a home build. It had rotted from the inside around the aft areas. Owners cut out several bits and welded in fresh plate. I saw it with first with some streaks on the paintwork, then they started cutting out...

SS Gt Britain has faired well and some thames barges .

Am I right in thinking that theses were made of iron and not steel ?

It's not uncommon to see new steel plates being welded over old ones
if they are not too bad .

Thanks to the clarity and views shared my thoughts have shifted from tidying up to thinking over whether I am really prepared to strip it all, outer and inner hulls and do it all properly. It's daunting to say the least, but if I am to go ahead then it's clearly the right thing to do. I will have the time. If I don't do it properly, I know it will always be a concern in my mind. Roger sets a superb example and expectation with his photos of what I am taking on (thanks) and the group have all supported the same views. It is not off the cards yet

ISTM that wood and steel have a similar issue. If you have a repair to do, and you don't do it properly now, you'll end up doing it properly later, and that'll be a far bigger job. Or you won't because it's too much, but then you'll have a worthless heap of rust on your hands.
