I've always wondered what is involved in actually starting a yacht club.
I've never joined one. Woody Allan said he'd never want to be in a club that would want him as a member. That said, can someone tell the short version of how to form a yacht club?

Get a group of like minded people, find somewhere to meet and socialise, somewhere to moor/ store the boats involved, elect a secretary/ treasurer/ supreme being.... think of a name, design a burgee, and notify the RYA of your existence..... its as simple as that. Done it once a long time ago and its still going!.....Go for it...Regards Tony W.

Unless there's some essential collective facility (e.g. tender storage, rescue boat) or collective activity (dinghy training, racing ...) you need why bother? It's a lot less hassle to remain "the guys who meet up in the Ship Inn every Sunday night". You can design a burgee, order t-shirts, produce the odd news sheet or web site, do cruises in company, hold an annual dinner..... without RYA recognition. As you grow the landlord might even give you your own noticeboard in the snug!

So draw and stitch ...

There is NO law that says you cannot design / create / make your own burgee. In fact you would probably find that most clubs haven't even 'protected' their Burgee design by regsitering it as a logo etc.

I designed my own Sunrider / Searider Yachts one .... get a PC program up like Paint etc. and have fun !!!!

Good advice here, keep it informal, then you don't get club politics, I was a club officer for two years, we had more committee members than members to preside over, most of the meetings were conducted half cut and only a few did all the work.

I resigned and after that the club fell apart, the members saw the club for what it was.

I did all the marketing and as has been said it's easy to pull a few club like bits together for very little outlay.

good luck wiht the set up.

Must agree ....

Start informal .... if it really gets going and you find the local pub is not big enough etc. then think about a Club ....

I was PR etc. on a Model Club Cmttee before ..... got really disallusioned with some .... Gave a load of suggestions / asked for support, wrote nearly all articles in Newsletter cause no-one else bothered .... When I resigned and left ..... found that some of my ideas were ressurected and used .....

Boat club ..... was in 2 clubs, first I left because a friend of a friend was given a mooring when I had been on waiting list for near 4 years...... club excuse was it was a test mooring and they were worried about the boat used .... BS ! Second club developed into a Big Boat vs Small Boat set of cliques ..... especially when they set about re-aligning moorings !!!!

No honestly - keep it simple and friendly - there's plenty of time later to create a Club and all its bits etc.

Having been in on the start of a few Yahoo groups ..... I can honestly say that the camaradie is healthier via the Internet Groups than via the usual club.

eg : PBOMeet group ...... every weekend boats out together, daily e-mail discussions, help and assistance without hassle. No club fee's ...... boats and people from all sorts of places and situations .....

I think it may have been Groucho Marx who said that, not Mr. Allen, but I digress...
Speaking as a committee member of a club which is getting on for 80 years old (the club that is, not me!), don't expect the committee system to make decisions quickly or logically! We tend to muddle onwards in vaguely the right direction; it needs a forceful commodore or secretary to really stick a metaphorical hot poker into a committee to truly get things moving on. In my experience the best, if not very constitutional, way of doing things is to do what you want to do, then present the committee with a fait accompli. Naturally this is a favourite of the current Commodore!

cheers,
david

Where would you intend on creating this club? Could be a lot of hassle in organising a "CLUB". Why not a cruising club that could meet on the water followed by a watering hole somewhere with discussion group sort of thing on the internet. I'm interested in either but it will be location dependant. (We're in the Solent area)

David, are you a gambling man? You say Groucho I say Allen. I'll wager on my man the sum of 1 Canadian 'Loonie' if you will wager the equivelant in what ever currency you use. No fooling around about this. If we can both agree who made the original quote, the loser will send the other that actual currencey by mail. OK?
The readers of this post will probably be able to tell us who is correct. You and I can work out addresses by email later concerning where the 'winnings' go.

Fair enough. If you desire to put yourself through all the aggro of committee meetings, constutional wrangles, protocols.... for the sake of a burgee (perhaps decorated with a picture of Groucho?) that's your choice. I've done my six years on the committee of an expanding yacht club (three as magazine editor and three as publicity officer). Enjoy!

You haven't even got a commitee yet and you have started arguing, not much chance of forming a club! Good luck if you do though

If you want a starter for a club that works, have a look at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ppc.org.uk>http://www.ppc.org.uk</A> Actually having taken a quick look, DON'T ! ;) Webmaster has gone Xmas crazy! Usually it's quite sophisticated and tame <s>?

No headquarters, no clubroom, no bar. It's a powerboater club, but has clear aims, is very active, has a well attended programme of events that covers people from East Coast to South Coast and beyond. The core members turn up for nearly every event, and help out all who need advice. The philosophy would suit what you are trying to start
