I have navionics for iPad and I love it. I have had it for 3 or 4 years.

I have two separate conventional chart plotters on boat but I use the iPad all the time for planning routes, reviewing tracks (often at home) and picking my way through tricky spots when on the boat, in conjuction with the on-board plotters.

Very regularly in last couple of months, I have discovered I have 'lost' the detail charts and my iPad automatically starts redownloading them, and then filling in the greyed out areas, IF my IPad is connected to the internet.

This is incredibly frustrating as I have once found myself on the boat with no wifi and no capability to re-download the maps.

I am keen to get to the bottom of this and understand what is happening. It has only started happening recently, and I think I am seeing some correlation to when my iPad gets close to running out of memory, but I can't be sure.

The amount of memory showing on the usage menu for the Navionics app is surprisingly small

After my music collection the biggest user of memory on my iPad is the Times/Sunday Times

I am trying to get a handle on whether :-

(a). the basemaps are purged regularly as part of the design by Navionics to reflect fact I have not renewed my updates subscription.

(B) the maps get 'bumped' by the IPad memory management system when memory runs short

(c) some other explanation

Has anyon else encountered this?

Whilst (b) might explain what's happening, I can't see why the IPad would single out this app and datafile to bump . I am not aware of losing any data files on any other apps.

If it is this, are there steps I can take ? I'd happily waive some of the colour supplements to the Sunday times to protect my charts.

I am running Navionics UK and Holland and Navionics Europe on an old iPad 2. Coincidentally I was running out of space yesterday - the UK app was taking about 1 Gb and the Europe nearly 2 Gb. I had lots of charts I wasn't using (and wasn't sure if they were updating) so I deleted both apps and reinstalled them with only the bits I needed. The UK one is now 150 Mb and the Europe one 173 Mb. I also have The Times app. It currently has three editions downloaded and is using 214 Mb of space. I have never paid the annual Navionics upgrade fee, only the original purchase price.

I haven't had any issues with charts disappearing, and I only had about 0.5 Gb free space for the last few months.

Individual editions of The Times can now be deleted from within the app to save space. There used to be a fault with the Times app where it took up bigger and bigger amounts of space even with the editions deleted. If yours is taking up a lot more space than mine you could delete and reinstall it. When you log back in it will give you a clean start. I did that on a friend's iPad and got back 3Gb.

Thanks Sandydog....

I was already deleting Times/Sunday times editions after reading but it was using 1.6GB despite only having today's edition. Something obviously wrong so I have deleted and reinstalled and it has freed up almost all of that

My UK and Europe navionics is only using about 120MB

I have Imray charts (which I bought but never use) which are using 750MB, which makes the navioncs ones very efficient .

Fixing the Times issue has certainly created loads of space so I will monitor now and see if that stops my navionics charts being deleted.

It still doesn't explain why it was Navionics data being bumped by the IPad as opposed to any other app, but I'll leave that for another day if this does indeed solved the problem

Thanks again

It doesn't sound likely it would delete the data randomly. Does it do it when the app is updated ? It might be worth switching off auto updates if you haven't already so it doesn't update at critical times without your knowledge. I wonder if it had really lost the data or just the link to it. If it happens again you could check the app size then see if it goes up when it re loads the charts. If it doesn't I suspect they were there all along but it couldn't see them. I expect you tried the usual switching the iPad on and off, or even resetting it. Mine 'lost' all its photos once but they came back after a restart. It fixes a lot of bugs.

I use the Navionics charts with my iNavX app. I had a very similar issue last week when the downloads charts had disappeared and I needed to download again. I have used the app regularly over the last three years and this the first time that it has happened. Can not find any reason why.

There was a major software problem a few months ago with one of their updates. It left random grey sections across my version. I reported it and they have corrected the fault in an update. They recommended deleting the app and reloading the updated version I suggest you contact them and check if this applies, I was impressed by their tech support. I can't take responsibility for any potential loss of app following this suggestion.
