I took it as a benchmark - an indicator that helps put prices into context and a point of interest in a discussion such as this.

60/40 split = 0.3177

Last week price was about 70ppl for 6000l+

0.7 + 0.3177 = 1.0177

Then add VAT to the whole lot = 1.0177 x 1.2 = 1.22 if they sold it at cost.

Or if they are selling it for £1.38 inc VAT
That’s £1.15 after the VAT taken off
Leaving them with about 13 pence per litre profit.

In Estartit during the summer season, there will be up to 10 large mobos which will fill up per day at the dock at about 1000 litres on average each one. Then loads and loads of smaller mobos at 200-300 litres ago.

At 13p profit per litre that would come to about 2k per day profit which would comfortably cover the cost of maintaining the fuel station and paying for the guy to watch over it.

Sailing yachts are a waste of space - as far as making money from the fuel station is concerned!

Isn't the 40% element for heating and electricity generating also taxed at 10.18 ppl plus 5% VAT, or does your 70ppl already include it?

Good question, my calculation is wrong.

The gas oil price will include the 10.18ppl duty already but the heating part will only be taxed at 5% VAT.

Propulsion
Extra duty = 52.95-10.18=42.77ppl
70ppl + 42.77ppl = 112.77ppl
VAT = 112.77 x 1.2 = 135.32ppl
60% of it is 81.19ppl

Heating
70ppl x 5% VAT = 73.05
40% of it is 29.4ppl

81.19ppl + 29.4ppl = 110.59 pence per litre

So their cost price is actually about 110.59 pence per litre

It tells you what the base price is, what they can probably buy red for. It was just an FYI. Thought that folk may just be interested.

It's interesting that even at the £1.80 retail price, that's only a margin of ~50ppl.

I also imagine marinas end up paying over the odds for gas oil as they don't have huge tanks and need deliveries at inconvenient times (bank holiday weekends etc).

On the whole, as long as the tanker delivery is over 1000 litres the price is pretty good. Obviously more litres equals a lower price but not hugely over that level. I'm sure that with their usage over a season that a marina is deemed to be a very good customer by the suppliers and get good terms.

Falmouth Haven £1.70
Falmouth Marina £1.58

Useful to me because I did not realise how much cheaper I could buy it locally. I will avoid discussing the price of milk or soya here and stick to what you suggested!
