It's getting very amusing!

Trailer Sailor - a naval person fitted with wheels?
Trailor Sailor - an american naval person fitted with wheels?
Trailer Sailer - a sailing vessel which is capable of easy mount/demount/launch from a purpose built trailer.

What do they teach in schools these days?

Re: Who is worried about Standard of spelling

I have never been very good at spelling but I certainly do not worry too much on this forum as the main point of it is to exchange views and information.
I would not want anyone to be put off posting just because they were worried about their grammar or spelling, as long as the message comes across that is all that is important.

I wasn't meaning to "have a go" if that's what it sounded like. Sorry!

I just find it funny, and my job (Printer) involves making sure that what we do is done correctly.

1 mis-spelled word can mean a costly re-print even if the customer has checked it first.

My regular bete noir is "stationery" & "stationary" which in my line of work crops up regularly.

Anyone out there got any other amusing mis-spellings?

Re: Who is worried about Standard of spelling

Well Yes I suppose that's true, but meanings can be very much changed by the misuse of spelling and the idea that it doesn't matter on the Internet was, I'm sure, sparked by a load of Californian computer nerds who couldn't spell.

We all make mistakes and typos, but one does assume that people who can afford a boat have been taught how to spell. Either that or they've won the lottery. I know I often fail, but I do try, we should all try.

Am I wrong to think more of those who generally spell correctly than those who don't? Perhaps, but I think it's a human reaction, and here on the Internet there is no other way to judge.

We do our best but perfection is an ideal we struggle wiv.

I have a list of answers to exam questions which shows the problems kids have with spelling, can I share a few with you.

1. Q In a democratic society, how important are elections?

1. A. Very important. Sex can only happen when a male gets an election.

2. Q What is the first thing you should do to someone who has been immobilised in a road accident.

2. A. Rape them tight in a blanket and give them a cup of tea.

3. Q What is artificial respiration commonly known as?

3. A. The kiss of death.

4. Q. What are steroids?

4. A. Things for keeping carpets still on the stairs.

5. Q. What is a morbid state?

5. A. When somebody makes a bigger offer.

6. Q. What is artificial insemination?

6. A. When a farmer does it to the cow instead of the bull.

Very sad but unfortunatly true.

It made me laff!

Trevor

"One assumes people who can afford a boat can spell

I am really surprised at you making this statement. (Had to abridge it a bit to fit on header). As you say here on the internet you do get an impression of people by what they write which includes how they spell. My parents, me and brother and sister were lucky enough to go to good primary schools, then Grammar schools and then on to further education, in fact mum was a teacher, but I still strugle like hell to make sure my spelling and grammar are correct.
Loads of sucessful people (if that is what you call people who have made enough money to get afloat) did not get a good education and struggle to write properly but I would not have a lessor opinion of them. It is the content of what people say which is important and the way they convey their message. It is obvious some posters do not have to worry too much about being able to afford what they want whereas others are very cost contious and struggle to "keep afloat". Also some boat at a minimal cost.
I do agree it is preferable for spelling to be correct so that meanings don't get confused.
One problem is that you post on here and you try to be reasonably quick in case your connection goes down, so you are under pressure which does not help. Also forum does not seem to have a spell checker.
Didn't someone famous say "Judge a man by his actions, not by his words"??
Only went on the forum tonight to see what people thought about going up the river Ore!!

Re: \"One assumes people who can afford a boat can spell

I think Milltech has a point: when reading someone's mail it is only natural to form an impression of the author from the content of the mail. Certainly the content and the message should be the most important aspect but it is hard for some not to notice errors in spelling or grammar. I am always conscious of my own output because I remember the days when senior management in administrative positions would reject a report if they found a spelling mistake, regardless of content!

Popular errors that I see on the web these days are "loose" instead of "lose", and "your" instead of "you're".

The bad news is that phone texting has a vocabulary all of its own, and some don't regard it as necessary to punctuate emails so I don't think this situation is likely to improve in the forseeable future.

Things are changing continually, and I can't understand why people become so upset about the change in language.

It's evolved over several hundred years, so that current day speakers of the language cannot easily understand Chaucer or Shakespear without guidance.

Even the 'English' language of the 1920's or 1930's is very, very different to today.

Internet usage has it's own very clear usage, and bulletin board users of 10 or 15 years ago, still have a vernacular which was partially about cutting down on the time spent online at great cost, and was also at the same time an 'internet' accent which was understood by the 'locals' which used the same medium.

Much of that idiom is now in general usage, even offline in normal conversation.

Language is always going to evolve, and there is nothing that will change that.

Yes, probably, but why do you spell Brother with a capital "B" and sister with a small "s"?
Is this bad grammar or just plain sexist??

I can't spell, so I normally compose posts in 'Word' then paste them in.
Also one of my daughters has always had trouble spelling, then in her second year at 'Uni' she was diagnosed as dyslexic, so help was given. It's far too late for me! I have learnt to live with it.

PS Trevor_swfyc - my spell checker told me that unfortunatly was spelt with an e.
Very sad but unfortunately true - but what do I know /forums/images/icons/blush.gif
