A long way from my boat! :(

We have a Standard Horizon VHF with Remote Mic/control/speaker at the helm. The remote failed recently due to some rather kak handed treatment by a crew member.

I contacted SH for advice, describing the failure mode ( PTT still works and so does the power button, all else dead ) SH detailed that there was a fuse in the main unit ( PCB mounted ) that was designed to protect the Mic. Being in Greece I don't want to ship the unit to the UK for repair. Their answer? Post me spare fuses and replacement instructions so that a local techie can do the job.

The charge when I enquired? 'Don't worry about it, cost us pennies and a stamp!'

Bravo Standard Horizon!

Bravo Standard Horizon!

Good to hear. That kind of service could win them some more customers.

Typical of SH, they really know how to keep customers

Excellent.
A few months ago I asked for a new gasket for the joint between the two halves on a remote VHF handset - careless handling had damaged it.
Certainly, they said, give us your address and we'll send it. How much, said I. Oh, don't worry about it, they said, it's not worth us raising an invoice.
Great kit and great service.

I've had service like this from them. Makes me wonder if anyone has ever paid for service with them!:D

I bought my GX2100E DSC AIS VHF radio privately, so no dealer stamp.
I emailed SH to see if I could activate the warranty period.
"No problem" was the reply from the SH UK service manager.
"Are you sure? Do you need any additional info?"
"Nope. My email is sufficient"

I hope I never have to have any repairs, under warranty or not, but I have been left with a warm fuzzy feeling regards Standard Horizon's commitment to customer service.

And they do. After getting similar service when my CP180 got zapped, I've since bought a fixed and a handheld DSC VHF from them.

+ another. My CP180 had a series of annoying problems and their service manager tried his best to fix it with advice, new software etc (I didn't want to remove it from the boat). As it did't work they persuaded me to send it back and they sent me a new one - 3 years after I bought it. New one perfect.
What a company!!!!!!!! Absolutely top drawer.

I've registered on this forum just to add to the kudos to Standard Horizon for their customer service.

I'm a UK-based kayaker, and my HX280E spends a lot of time in salt-water. I'm very careful about rinsing all my kit off after being in the sea, but I've never bothered taking the battery off my radio to rinse it as the user guide doesn't tell you to.

A few weeks ago, my radio started constantly displaying 'busy', regardless of what I did with the squelch. I popped the battery off, to find that the gap between the battery and the radio was absolutely packed with salt crystals. I chipped these off, leaving a very sorry-looking finish to the radio body, and contacted Standard Horizon UK, even though it was well out of the warranty period.

Needless to say... A courier has just dropped off a replacement unit. Considering I only really chose this radio as it was the cheapest one that did what I wanted, it's amazing that Standard Horizon have such a good level of customer service.

Also - lesson learned: hopefully your radios don't get as wet as mine usually does, but when you're rinsing them, it's a good idea to pop the battery off and carefully clean out in there.
