Just had to post a big up for standard horizon, I went to check the battery charge level on my handheld vhf at the weekend and found it would not power up at all, as it's been stored on the charging base I assumed the battery would be fine.
It just so happened that I was due to be driving down the M3 monday so made a pitstop into yaesu uk main place at winchester and explained what was up with it, now have it back (actually a replacement unit) via fedex and with a minor toungue in cheek scrounging email they have chucked a spare battery in the box as well.
Nice one SH that's fantastic customer service! Now I remember why I didn't buy a cheap chinese one (yes I am aware they are made in china, but they are made properly).

P.S. If you could see you way to chuck a new GX2200 in the box for my trouble......:p

Yep, had similar good service from them recently. VHF radio with minor fault was sent to their servicing dept, fixed and back to me within the week.

Are you saying your battery ran down because it was stored in the charging cradle or that it shouldn't have because you were keeping it charged? I only ask because I store mine on the cradle but don't plug it in when it's not needed.

Plus one on the customer service, the main man was very happy to chat with me at the SIBS for 20 minutes or so about the new GX6500 that's due out despite me saying I couldn't afford one straight away. Talked me through the features even though he didn't have one there. I know it was sales talk etc but it wasn't pushy and very casual.

I'm still waiting and saving my pennies.

will they replace lost handheld units one has left on the slipway when bringing a yacht back in and forgetting about the vhf?
I doubt they will go that far....

As for the charging cradle I posed the question earlier and got the reply.
“Could this problem have been caused by being kept on a powered up charging cradle?
Yes it could.
Please do not leave in charging cradle after battery is charged.

That is a PITA as it's the best way to ensure it's always in the right place and ready to go.
I did check it through an ammeter before fitting on the boat and the charging cradle did appear to drop to no load when the unit was fully charged and rise to a few milliamps if the radio was powered up with a few seconds of transmit then drop back to zero after a short time so it must have a good level of auto control in it but maybe not enough.

Lithium and similar type batteries benefit from being completely discharged every now and then (completely the opposite of lead-acid batteries). Not sure if SH handheld VHF is in this category.

I try ('try' to remember) to run all my laptops, phones etc down once a month. But if I were really that organised then my boat would look fantastic :o
