with the speed. sometimes it measures wind speed OK but then the reading gradually collapses to zero for a while and then re-starts. I do not believe there is a dodgy connecting wire.

anyone familiar with the way it works?
 
I have an in-line connector with ST50 (same transducer probably) and have similar problems occasionally which is definitely a connector problem - specifically at the extra in-line connector. The only other connection is at the control head and this seems fine.
 
Also had a similar problem in which all I get is the dashes on the display. It is intermittent and sometimes works fine for months and then just goes to the dashes. I know others have a similar problem and no one seems to know why.
Sometimes switching it on and off works..sometimes it doesn't.

Mine was showing this sort of behaviour last season. When the mast was lowered last winter, first time for about 3 years, and the transducer removed, a fair amount of water came out, and the connector pins showed some corrosion.
The O-ring around the stem looked in poor condition so I replaced that, cleaned the contacts and applied plenty of silicone grease. Working OK now, touch wood!
The Raymarine site gives voltage readings for the various wires, under FAQ's.
 
I've had a fair bit of experience with these. I believe the mast head unit is most probably not 100% water proof.
First check your wiring from top to bottom, (a pain I know).

After that you will most likely need a new MHU, I understand it's very unusual for the ST60 instrument to fail, (mine's 15 years old but I've been through 3 MHUs).
If you replace the MHU wrap waterproof tape around the joint where the long arm screws into the connecting box.
 
Mine is 10 years old and over the last few months showed similar effects. Just before we left on our 10 week cruise to France, I got a friend to winch me up the mast. I took the transducer off and brought it down. The lower bearing was showing signs of rust so I freed it up with WD40 and applied some light oil with a lot of spinning. Just before putting the anemometer back on the spindle I saw some dirt in the bottom of the cup. In cleaning this out I found there is a water vent that was completely blocked and hidden. This should allow any water to escape - instead it was allowing water, whenever it rained, to enter the lower ball race. I cleaned it all out, put it back up and it has worked fine since. We are now at ile d' Yeu on our way back from la Rochelle.
