...and sometimes not. I'm inclined to agree that it's probably a combination of gain and sea bed. I've never been able to determine whether it's worse over something that gives a good echo (hard sand) or a lousy echo (weed). Either way, I've played around with the gain and it doesn't seem to make much difference. The trouble is that this fault is so infrequent that I can spend 6 months thinking I've sorted it and then it will do it again. Still, as I say, it's not too often. Other than that it behaves really well.
Well that stirred a discussion. Many thanks to you all for taking the trouble to reply. I think I am going to go for the Raymarine and risk the extra capital. If i am buying so much electronics must be due an ample discount. (I can dream cant i.....)
I recently bought a second hand B&G Hercules system that had been recovered when the instrumentation was being updated. However the the connecting plugs that are used to terminate the various sensors and displays onto the master unit were cut off. I have managed to verify that some bits work but would be interested if you were thinking of disposing of your old equipment.
The St60 plug does not seal completely, just slows the flow down. I had a problem with the plug--they had a duff batch without a doping compound which let the water through. Took a while to get one that worked, but i'm pleased with the system--so far.
Can't comment on Clipper. Have lots of ST60 instruments (Log, Echo Sounder, Wind, Close Hauled, Maxi, Multi and 3 AP heads). 3 Instruments failed in the first year and were replaced under warranty, after that (3 years now) no more problems. Very well readable from distance. Mostly easy to use. Would take them again.
