Bad: I hate having something on the boat that does work.
Even worse: The ST50 masthead unit is discontinued.

As Bad: Instruments that don't match (ST60+ wind & ST50 Tridata)
Even worse: Having to find the best part of £1000 to upgrade everything to ST60+

I know I could find the grub screw has let go of the shaft or something ... but I am rarely that lucky! Is there anyone out there that can rebuild ST50 masthead units?

Very interesting. I have an ST60 wind that causes an ST50 Tridata to constantly sound an alarm. Do you have this problem? I've had to disconnect the ST50 Tridata to stop the bxxxxxy thing driving me mad!

I have exactly the same problem. I'm pretty sure the transducer is at fault and have spoken directly to Raymarine who confirm the ST60 transducer is NOT compatible with the ST50 instrument. I'll therefore have to replace both the transducer and the wind instrument with an ST60.

However they have confirmed that the ST50 tridata (and other ST50 instrumentation) will inter-work with the ST60 wind so long as the transducer is connected to the wind instrument and this is then connected to the Tridata via SeaTalk - ie the wind instrument takes the analogue signal from the transducer and then outputs the info onto the Seatalk bus as a digital stream. This makes sense and should avoid the necessity for a complete system upgrade.

I replaced my st50 for st40 last season, as the display went faulty. Therefore I have a st50 masthead unit going spare (for reasonable remuneration).

Whatever you do, get a WRITTEN quote first. They are horrendously expensive for the simplest of jobs e.g. bearing replacement.

Try Peter McNair of 'Marine Maintenance' based at Haslar (023 9260 2344). He fixed mine using a reconditioned mast head unit for about £100 all in and the job was completed within a week of being asked... brilliant!

Cheers
