My mates boat has an old st50 tridata fitted. Depth not working on it. The readout is missing bits of the segments as well. Borrowed an identical unit and connected it up to the sensors and it works ok, so the log and paddle wheel sensors work, but the head doesn't. Trying to find a reasonable cost repair option for her but Raymarine gear is so expensive now. So what are the options for her? Is it to try and find a second hand tridata 50 or do later ones fit and work with the existing sensors? Or do we rip it out and fit something cheaper like a Clipper. Would the clipper work with the existing sensors or would they need changing as well. (I suspect I know the answer to this one). Does any one have an old unit that works and they want to sell? This would probably be the easiest cheapest option.

I have ST50 and 60 and bought up a big bumper lot of them from ebay so I have lots of units spare in case of failure. Its saved me a few times.

The ST60 Tridata, possibly more available, will replace the ST50. Fitting will require the ST50 connector plugs to be cut off the wiring and replaced by 2.8mm female spades. To function properly the ST60 requires a working thermistor in the speed transducer for temperature readout. These have been known to fail, but a dummy resistor will substitute.

Thanks Paul, this only the display screen and not the full instrument. It does look as though ebay may be the only cheap option for her though. It's just that I'm in Portugal and the delivery to here is dodgy to say the least.
These screens fade/fail over time and are fairly straightforward to replace, so this is a good option. Bear in mind that second hand kit will have a correspondingly old screen...

Thanks guys, I understand about changing the display in the unit but the depth readout is not working either, it's flashing all the time,
so there's something wrong on the board itself as well as the display, hence the need to change it out for either something else or to replace with another head unit that works.

Out of interest, will an ST60 work with the sensors from the ST50. That way I don't have to change the through hull and recable them. The rest of the instruments are ST 60's so it would make sense to go that way if they are compatible.

The i40 bidata is a good functional replacement for the ST50 tridata. It works with the same transducers and shows the same data - the main difference is that it shows two items of data at once instead of three, but water temperature, log and trip are still all available. The only thing missing is the timer feature.

Yes. See post #5

No secret. Only needed if your thermistor has failed but if it has then the ST60 goes into repeater mode, unlike the ST50. A resistor of, say 10Kohms is needed across the instrument terminals that would normally be connected to the brown & white wires
