We're thinking of taking a run across from the eastern Solent over to St Vaast this weekend (weather permitting). Any other forumites thinking of heading in that direction? A bit of company and the reassurance of safety in numbers would be great.

Good idea but unfortunately we have plans and bookings in Yarmouth. Maybe next time.

A couple of years ago we did a fantastic crossing to St Vaast. Left Chichester bar at 7pm Friday evening and had a milky glass crossing arriving at around 10pm. I like St Vaast, a very nice harbour.

Probably a bit late for you now but just in case anyone else is going to St Vaast:

A Cracking little place, lovely little chapel where you can spend a bit of time thinking about those less fortunate lost at sea far from home, some good eateries and for us the best bit - electric bikes from the Tourist Advice centre.

The tourist information centre don't make it easy, only speak French, close for lunch during the afternoon and you have to fill out a seperate form for each bike regardless of whether it's you and the missus. You rent them for a morning or an afternoon.

As you start to pedal the bike helps you and you can choose a small or large amount of assistance. We went for miles down little country lanes as well as along the coastal road.

We had cracking weather and will definitely pop back. Really close to Cherbourg so an alternative port as a staging post for cross channel jaunts. The entry looks a little daunting at first on the charts but it's really no problem at all subject to the usual precautions.

I word of warning though, don't plan to but fuel there. Very expensive and an automatic pump that works on a credit card and stops at around 60 litres. Your credit card company will probably stop your card if they see 3 transactions at the same place in close succession so be warned.

Haven't we just had a great weekend - we were in Bembridge for the first time in quite a while.

Henry :)

We decided against the trip on Thursday evening. Fog was forecast for Sunday, so didn't fancy that much. The last time we went across we hit a fog bank mid-channel so we speak from experience.

Not all bad though. We had a fantastic weekend, a good run from Port Solent to Studland and back via Lymington.

We hope to make the trip to S.Vaast soon so if anyone's up for it drop us a PM
