We ended up in St peter port last weekend, arriving on the Friday before the bank holiday and were surprised to find the visitors marina very empty. So much so that the marina staff escorted us into the marina and then said choose anywhere you like from here to that jetty, which we did.
Next day, being Saturday, we were going to leave on the turn of high tide and whilst looking at the cill to see how much water there was available I spoke with the harbour crew and explained that we would be leaving in 2 hours and in the event that things may get busy can they keep boats off us until we have gone. This conversation dident go down well and I was informed they cant promise anything.
Tide comes up and first motor boat in was told to go alongside us!!!!!. They were asking why cant they go alongside the loads of spare jetty space and very apologetic to us etc. Next mobo followed by 3 others before we left all had alongside berths. Our poor rafters had to wait on board 2 hours until we cast off and then had their own berth.
Never experienced that, as a regular, frequent visitor to SPP and can only imagine that they have people trying to avoid rafting by claiming to be leaving. And before you say it, no we were not rude or pushy in any way, quite the opposite, we go boating to relax and have fun but something got his back up and he used his powers in the incorrect manner and it has put us right off another visit soon. Be warned

We invariably have problems with at least one member of staff in SPP. last year we arrived in convoy with another boat, or rather the other boat arrived, was allocated a berth, and then explained that we were arriving within the next 10 minutes and could we be given a berth on the same swan pontoon. The HM readily agreed and our friends communicated this to us, so when we arrived as part of a long queue of boats we told the youngster of the situation. He told is no uncertain terms that they never reserve berths, so I explained again what we'd been told. At this stage he virtually lost it and said that he was in 2 minds to ask us to leave the Harbour!! I must say that I was now getting rather fed up with his attitude, especially as I was instructed to go on to a holding pontoon off the yacht club, whilst dozens of other boats proceeded on their way.
I again tried to tell him what we'd been told, and he curtly said/reiterated that we were wrong, and refused my request that he contact his colleague on the pontoon to check what I was telling him.. I again asked why all the other boats were being shown in before us,and he then sped off.
Eventually another HM came over to us and said to proceed to the berth that had been saved for us!! I refrained from asking or complaining about our previous treatment as the second chap couldn't have been more helpful, but it certainly left a sour taste.

I wonder if it was the same youngster that you spoke to.

Sounds like someone needs to make a complaint about him or take some other form of action. Nudging him into the water seems like quite a good idea. I am afraid I have no time for unhelpful people

I think the problem is any complaint could make life difficult on next visit, if you get my drift, as we plan at least two more trips there before end of season. At least now there is plenty of space.

The harbour master in question does have a bit of a reputation to be maybe not the most helpful but I did not expect that result.

Trouble is I remember the days when the old crew, could pack them in tight and still keep every visitor happy. It comes with knowledge and attitiude
