St Helier

The CI's RNLI boats sometimes take up the French slack-I am sure the reverse is a possibility.

Sybarite will know a little more perhaps.

The son of an old Speedway racing mate of mine is on the Alderney RNLI crew. Its perhaps only gossip, but it appears that the St Helier crew expected to be able to use the boat as their own and assist local fishing boats in trouble without the proper procedures being in place.

When challenged about it, it kicked off.

Worked out well!

The BBC's time line is all a bit vague. Does anyone know exactly/specifically what this is all about?

My recollection is that the lifeboat was giving tows for free to the annoyance of people who wanted to earn money from providing the service.

Don’t change your Direct Debit without first sending a letter /email to explain why. Needs the words to have any visibility at Poole (and/or Jersey).

Might do that. I'll probably just wait a while for more plausible facts to come out.

On a serious note, I would be very interested in the full facts as I am thinking about changing my dd.

Me too, but from his previous postings on the subject I doubt that Rich's 'facts' will be particularly balanced. I'm fully prepared to be proved wrong but I'm not holding my breath.

No doubt. Truth is a strange thing. I've been in situations carrying out internal investigations where everyone was probably trying to tell the truth yet it was hard to correlate some of the stories. We'll see what he says then see where it goes.

I would be interested to know what the full details are concerning Andy Hibbs original dismissal by the RNLI. He was apparently subsequently re-instated by the RNLI with a full apology.

This is truly shambolic. I have dismissed dozens of employees during my career for almost every rule transgression you can think of and most of these have appealed against the dismissal but not one has ever been re-instated upon appeal.

The reason is simple .... I did a thorough and conscientious job the first time around such that there was no margin for error and the appeal panel had no sensible option open to them other than to agree with my initial decision.

If I had ever been in the situation where the appeal panel had felt it appropriate to reinstate and issue a "full apology" to a dismissed employee, I would have tendered my resignation immediately on the grounds of my personal incompetence.

I have no idea whether the person who conducted the RNLI disciplinary investigation and/or dismissal hearing has resigned but it sounds to me as if the Jersey crew are expecting that, or something similar, and I can fully understand their position.

Ps, I’m only a marine engineer, not a journalist L

The MCA and the CROSS have a legal right to call the other country's service if necessary.

An international convention to this effect was entered into some years ago.

Good heavens. Your appointment practices might need some attention.

Yours, thread-driftingly

JD

Your turn to work out the figures JD: (dozens of dismissals / dozens of thousands of employees) x 100 / 30 = % pa

Of course, if you include redundancy dismissals then the numerator also rises into thousands but, for obvious reasons, I've excluded these.

So, within 24 hours of the AWLB being taken back to Poole, an incident occurs for which the lifeboat would have been a tremendous asset, pumping out the water while it is towed back to St Helier, or at least beaching somewhere out of the way of other shipping.

Navigational Warning Number 40
Jersey SOUTH Coast: Chart No: BA1137
Approaches to St.Helier
A 65 FT MOTOR VESSEL HAS SUNK 0.75NM NW OF PASSAGE ROCK NORTH CARDINAL BUOY
In Position 49° 09.908'N 002° 13.217' W
THE NW AND WESTERN PASSAGES ARE CLOSED TO ALL COMMERCIAL SHIPPING. ALL OTHER VESSELS ARE TO PROCEED WITH CAUTION WHEN TRANSITING THE AREA.

Instead it sank south of St Brelades Bay, blocking the main channel approaching St Helier from the west to commercial shipping. That'll mean quite a detour until they can recover the wreck.

Not the finest hour for either the RNLI or the St Helier crew who triggered the latest crisis.
