St Helier

Channelyacht

That is undoubtedly true. But I wouldn't dismiss the impact of local feelings as alluded to by Elecglitch - a good Cox who is an outsider will find it difficult to gain the support of local crew for as long as support for Andy Hibbs remains strong.

I struggle to imagine that the RNLI will want to ship in whole crews indefinitely (as they had to do for the period when the dispute raged back in the Spring).

Oh, and I think it is a Tamar, not a Shannon. (Your post #28).

Yes it is a Tamar. I confirmed that with a crew member.

IIRC the Tamar did head out while I was there. Certainly there were people on it doing I think maintenance.

At the same time they were doing training exercises on the RIB.

Do the crews overlap between the Tamar and the RIBs?

Very worrying and putting lives at risk. I hope it gets resolved, one way or another, very quickly.

Is it that serious -with an inshore boat at St Catherines & , presumably an offshore at Guernsey.
Do the CG have trailer mounted RIBS in Jersey? I have seen them in the UK ( but not sure if still in UK)
bearing in mind that there is a 40% chance that an offshore incident may be toward Guernsey & 40% it would be near a French station ( would they attend?) there would be some sort of cover, albeit a bit more restricted, - would there not?
The worse scenario would be where an offshore boat was needed close in to jersey & the extra hour taken for a boat to get there could be the problem.
What about helicopter cover- is there any?
With strong tides I expect a lot of the work would be in towing casualties ( is that correct?) & the French would charge for that so not so good for a casualty, but it would be a rescue after all.
Is that totally wrong?
Looking at what the Jersey LB has done in the past how could that have been served by other boats- could it? Would it have made a significant difference to the outcome.
I am not trying to criticize the Jersey LB , only ask the question as to what the interim alternatives are. Does the RNLI have any plan?

statement from HQ station closed until further notice will attempt to raise new crew

What a mess. And very sad for the majority of the volunteers on Jersey.

I am sure there are faults on both sides (and the attempt to go independent whilst not owning the boat, the lease on the station or probably the bank funds is very naive).
But like many on here I am a member of the RNLI, and feel (from previous discussions with crews across the country) that the RNLI centre can be somewhat remote and sometimes unhelpful to the crews on the ground.
I wish we could be informed and understand more about the facts here, as if it merits a mass petition of RNLI Governors to Poole HQ for them to get more people oriented this could happen.

There is no SAR helicopter in Jersey (or Guernsey). (Not sure where the nearest French one is).

Worst case I can think of is a boat on the rocks in weather where it is too dangerous to launch an ILB. If I were the one in the water at that time, I wouldn't be happy to wait an extra hour for the Guernsey AWB to show up.

Whilst some may argue that the Jersey AWB is (or was!) primarily there because the money was raised locally for one, I doubt anyone would suggest it is totally unwarranted. It is there for a reason.

Staff morale is not the best in the RNLI.

It is going to be very difficult if a new RNLI crew is foisted on St Helier in face of the likely hostility between the old and the new.

Before this all gets blown out of all proportion........A volunteer has decided to stop volunteering because he has got the hump. His colleagues feel they must support him. It happens somewhere every day, it's life. The world will move on. The RNLI will move on. It does not mean that the majority of the population of Jersey are going to black list the RNLI. In fact, not even all volunteers on the Island have.

Fair points.

However, the fact that the only AWB in Jersey is currently on its way back to Poole is something that IS of concern to anyone who uses the sea in those parts. That certainly is not something happening "somewhere every day".
