I’ve just received my boats SSR registration as a .PDF file via email. Is that it? What happened to the small laminated certificate they used to send out?
Well there’s the thing, a quick edit of the .PDF certificate and my boat can shrink from 9.7 meters to 5 meters which should help to make marina fees more affordable. Just about every marina office I’ve checked into, takes the length of the boat from the registration document.Did the old certificate have any built-in validation mechanism such as a hologram, demonstrating that it was not home-made? Or the new one have at least a QR code that can be used on-line to validate it digitally? (Like Covid-19 certification.)
You need two versions, one for Aduanas which corresponds to insurance certificate, one for marinas. So I'm told.Well there’s the thing, a quick edit of the .PDF certificate and my boat can shrink from 9.7 meters to 5 meters which should help to make marina fees more affordable. I thought that technically itks a requirement if you go more than 12 miles offshore, and definitely for France, though I’ve never been asked for any documentation apart from a passport, and a small stack of forms, the French do love a bit if that.I wasn’t going to bother renewing..
Is it a requirement for visiting France?
YES.I wasn’t going to bother renewing..

The new ones have a QR code which links to an online version of exactly the same certificate.Did the old certificate have any built-in validation mechanism such as a hologram, demonstrating that it was not home-made? I take you mean the number on the boat? I think that's 35mm on small craft, though it’s on the MCA web site, I read it once, put 50mm numbers on and forgot about it. They must stand out, but there's no colour stipulation. Our certificate we laminated ourselves, but as I say, no Frenchman has yet inspected my handiwork.Discrepant responses - two saying France didn’t ask for it (nor was I) and one saying yes you need it.
If it is the law in France that foreign boats need registering, is there a minimum size?
No discrepancy.Discrepant responses - two saying France didn’t ask for it (nor was I) and one saying yes you need it.

Sorry no, boat size below which registration not required..I take you mean the number on the boat? Yes but if in practice it’s never asked for, then it doesn’t matter (to me at least ).No discrepancy.
A UK boat visiting France must by law be registered, either SSR or Part 1.
Not every boat is asked for this by port officials when arriving, or visiting a marina.
But if asked and cannot show then expect trouble.
Far too small to cross the channel. 3m? Though there is that guy who is crossing the atlantic in a hip bath….Sorry no, boat size below which registration not required..
