I've been looking for an SSB transceiver to fit on my British regiatered boat. The ICOM 710 is no longer in productipn and searches on ebay have come to nought. The ICOM802, which replaced the 710, has not got European type approval and according to ICOM is unlikely ever to have it and so it is ilegal to fit on a Britsh registered boat.

Consequently the only solution is to buy a commercial set but the costs are astronomic.

As I understand it all the boats on the ARC have got SSB, so what are they using?

Anyone have any ideas about a solution?

Get yourself an all-banded ham radio set. You should be able to do that second hand for £600. OK they are not quite as robust as dedicated marine kit - dont have laquered pcb's etc - but that is unlikely to matter in a dry modern boat. Nor will you have DSC, but I'm not sue if there is any useability in HF DSC. If you need help I would have thought an EPIRB much better bet. What you will gain is continuously variable tuning rather than a canalised system.

Friends who have been on the ARC tell me thats what most people do. Whats more, some dont have licenses - who is there to catch you mid ocean?
