Squeaking Jabsco toilet pump

I always greased the inside of the pump barrel at the start of every season with a waterproof grease originally like we used in the stern gland greaser, but when Duckhams keenol was withdrawn switched to one I found in the auto spare shop top of Quay hill in Lymington, grease might be called 'Morris's? our Jabsco on that boat was nearly 20 years old when we sold it and always worked easily. Our current boat that we fitted a new Twist'n lock loo to a year ago is still squeak free on it's original assembly lubrication but if and when it needs help I will treat it with a light grease again, ideally a teflon one which is what the renowned Peggy Hall AKA 'Headmistress', who contributes here sometimes, recommends.

We live aboard with two Jabsco toilets. I hate them. They came with the boat and I can't believe how rubbish they are. To keep them easy to pump whilst we live onboard we unscrew the plunger every 7-10 days and grease the piston seal and fill the void under the screw cap with white grease. The difference in amazing. Our last boat had a Blakes Lavac that never needed any maintenance other than a pump NRV in 11 years of use. These Jabsco toilets are like a hobby that needs something every week or two.

Surely if you add up all those weekly greasing sessions you could have installed a pair of Lavacs in less time overall? :)

My experience was that oil down the bowl didn't solve the problem for long. A drop above the plunger, by removing the top plate, has proved far more effective.

For the last ten years, I've used the cleaner / lubricator thingy that is connected inline with the clean water inlet to the toilet (can't remember what it's called) and it lasts about a season. Fresh smelling toilet and no squeeks in the pump. No other maintainance is ever done on our Jabsco manual toilet which is used in both fresh and sea water.

+1 for Silicone Grease.

Give it a try, seriously.
One smear lasts at least 1, even 2 seasons regular use without any need for further assistance.

We used to use cheap washing up liquid.
Then we used vegetable oil.
They both stay in the cupboard since I applied silicone grease at the start of last year.

Toilet has remained free and easy to pump every time.

This could be why ours is trouble free. We also have an in-line cleaner (YachtiCon Purytec is what it says on the bottle)
