Square crystals in bilge water

I hope your holding tank is in good shape.

Luckily no holding tank to worry about, so I can at least rule that out :)

I think there were some loose rust fragments in the bilge from where I'd chipped away at a couple of keel bolts. It's possible they'd sat in the water and coloured it. Have dried and hoovered out as far as I can reach now, so I will go sailing and see what happens again! ?

Absolutely no evidence of ingress when stationary in the marina, so fairly convinced anything coming in is related to heeling (e.g. water moving between comparments or worst case scenario a leak through bolts when the bilge keels are under load), or potentially related to the water getting in through leaking fixes somehow.

And I've managed to catch up on some missed chemistry school education! (or maybe just forgotten...)

As well as being finely ground table salt is also adulterated with anti-caking agent.
It also has added sodium iodide, as there's a rather nasty deficiency disease associated with lack of iodine - it causes loss of intelligence, if I've got the right one.

Many staple foods have legally required additives - bread, for instance, has to have added vitamin C, and I think they recently required it to have folic acid (reduces spina bifida).
